I woke up suddenly to the sound of thunder.

The time on the alarm clock next to the bed read 2:14 am.

"Up already?" My head snapped around at Mike.

"Sorry to startle you." He smirked.

"What are you doing up?" I asked.

"On my phone." He said and I looked over noticing his phone in his hand.

"You sure you're okay with me crashing here?" I asked. "I promise i'll find somewhere else to sleep later." I had fully turned over now.

"No, don't worry about it. You can stay for as long as you want." He said causing me to smile.

"The rain, hitting against the house. It's really peaceful." I observed.

"Yeah." He agreed. "Can you get me a new phone?" I asked and his eyes were now off his phone and looking at mine.

"Nevermind, it's okay you're already doing enough." I said.

He turned off his phone and turned completely towards me.

"You know my family is rich, of course i'll get you a new one." He reached over me and placed his phone on the bedside table.

"Must be nice." I snickered.

"Yeah when they're around, so never." He said sighing.

"Sorry," He looked at me. "That they're never around." I apologized.

"Don't say sorry, your dad literally... beats you up." He touched the cut on my bottom lip and I watched as his face softened.

I winced quietly.

"You okay?" He then lightly touched my cheek and I nodded swallowing.

"You know he wasn't always bad. Before mom left, he was more devoted. He didn't get drunk every night, or hurt me." I said trying to erase the image of my mom out of my head.

"Yeah? Do you know where your mom is?" He asked.

"No," I held back tears. "No, she, she didn't want me. She didn't want anything to do with me. She doesn't call or visit, or send cards for Christmas or birthdays. She doesn't care." I shook my head.

"I'm so sorry." Mike tucked a loose hair behind my ear.

If Jess were to find us like this, we would be dead.

"It's late, get to sleep." Mike turned away and used a remote to turn off the lights.

I closed my eyes and let the sound of rain beating against the sides of the house drift me into sleep.

"Mom please stay with me." I begged.

"Let go of me, go back home with your father!" She yelled before pushing my hands away from hers. I stumbled back falling into the road.

I screamed. "Sam! Sam!" I slowly opened my eyes as a tear fell.

"What's wrong?" Mike was above me.

"Nothing I can't sleep."

"Nothing? You were screaming." He said breathing heavily. "I almost couldn't wake you." He added.

"Sorry, um. Just go back to sleep." I said turning on my side.

"Were you having a nightmare?" He asked.

"Goodnight Mike."

"Sam, you can talk to me."

"No, I can't." I said quickly.

"Ok, goodnight." He said, I felt him turn on his side.

My eyes fluttered open and I sat up looking over, Mike wasn't there.

I got out of bed, "Mike?" I went down the stairs.

Mike was in the kitchen cooking bacon.

"What are you doing?" I asked walking up to him.

"You scared me, i'm just making you breakfast. Is that not allowed?" He questioned me.

I hit his shoulder. "You know how to cook?" I asked.

"Yeah." He flipped a piece of bacon over.

"So, when do you want me out?" I grabbed a cooked piece of bacon.

"You don't have to leave." He turned his head towards me.

"In fact, I don't want you to leave." He added.

"This isn't going to sit well with Jess." I stated.

"Listen, it's not like that and I won't tell her okay?" He said.

"Fine." I sighed.

"Maybe you should go talk to your dad." He looked at me.

I looked back confused.

"What? He might not be drunk this morning."

"He's always drunk." I corrected him.

"Well what do you want to do today?" He asked.

"Rest, my hip still hurts." I sighed while I walked over to the couch and sat down.

"You could have got pain meds for that at the hospital."

"I know." I brought my legs up, wincing, and laid fully down on the couch.

"Here, this is all I have that might help." I turned my head behind the couch, Mike was handing me a bottle of pamprin.

I laughed, "This is for cramps-"

"I know but your hip is in that area." He quickly defended himself.

"Good thinking I guess."

"Are you gonna eat breakfast?" He walked back into the kitchen.

"No, i'm good." I placed my head on the pillow and closed my eyes.

"You should probably eat." He said. I opened my eyes.

"Or I could sleep." I said closing my eyes again.

"Sam, eat." He demanded.

"Mike, no." I tried to fall asleep.

"Fine, I guess you just won't get dessert later like I planned." He said intimidating me.

I stood up and looked over the couch, "Who are you my daddy?" I eyed him.

"Only if you want me to be." He smirked.

My eyes flashed in embarrassment. "Well what's the dessert?" I then leaned on the back of the couch.

"Your favorite cheese cake." He said.

"Strawberry?" I asked.

"I don't know, why don't you look." He nodded his head toward the fridge.

I walked over and opened the fridge to see strawberry cheese cake.

"It is." I smiled.

"Yeah, eat breakfast with me please." He placed down to plates with eggs, bacon, and toast on the counter.

"Okay." I walked over to the counter and sat on the stool.

Mike sat down next to me and reached over to grab the pepper. Our faces were almost touching until he moved back and stared at me for a second.

"Well... let's- dig in." He said giving me a fork.

"Thanks." I began eating my eggs and snuck in a few glances at Mike. Mike and I didn't have the best friendship back then but, now he was more than half of what my mind was thinking of. I'm sure it's not the same for him though and I need to accept that.
