At six o'clock, I woke up Mike.
"It's six already?" He yawned with his eyes halfway open.
"Just a little longer." He said curling back into his pillow.
I then grabbed a pillow and hit him.
"Hey! Come on Sam, just a few more minutes."
I hit him again and he grabbed a pillow and hit me, knocking me off the bed.
"Ow." I said sitting up with a wince.
"Shit, are you okay?" He quickly got up and crouched beside me.
I took the pillow that was still in my hand and swung.
"You trickster." As I went to swing again, his words stopped me.
"Fine fine. I beg for mercy." He said getting on his knees.
"Good. Now get ready."
"Yes ma'am." He stood up. Mike was taller than me by a few inches, so he looked down at me.
I usually don't care about what people think about me or how they see me. With Mike it was different. I didn't like him as much before, he was your generic jock. douchy, funny, loved girls but wasn't a big fan of commitment. Sometimes it makes me wonder if he really does care..
"You zoning out there?" He said waving his hand in front of my face.
I shook my head. "Mike, can I ask you something?" I started.
"Of course." His hand went down my back.
"Do you actually care about me? Or want to be with me?"
He put his hands down slowly. "We've talked about this before Sam." He sighed.
"No we didn't. We talked about if you liked me. But it seems you like a lot of girls but we both know you fail at the commitment part." I spoke truthfully.
"Are you serious? You have no idea how committed I have been to you, even before I told you I liked you."
I thought about everything Mike had done for me, ever since we made it off that mountain.
"You're right. I'm sorry." I looked down. Mike placed his hands on the sides of my face but I moved away and headed to my room to look for something to wear.
After I was dressed and ready it was 7:30 and I waited on the couch downstairs.
"You ready?" Mike asked walking up to me.
I nodded.
When I got to the door and opened it, Mike grabbed my forearm gently. I looked at him. He kissed my cheek. I gave him a small smile but walked out the door without saying anything.
As we were driving to the fair, I could tell by the way Mike clenched his jaw that he was frustrated with the way I was distancing myself.
Ashley and Chris greeted us when we met by the entrance.
"Hey Sam how you doing!" Chris said hitting my shoulder. I laughed, "I've been alright, what have you two been up to?" I smirked looking between Ashley and Chris.
Chris looked at Ashley with a cheesy smile. "Stop it." She chuckled and hit his arm.
"You two are like a middle school couple, let's go check out the rides." Mike joked.
We all got wristbands and rode the starship first.
Ashley and I were next to each other screaming while Mike and Chris were on the other side. They looked scared as shit.
After a few rides, we got to the farris wheel. Mike and I sat down and waited for Chris and Ashley to get in the one behind us.
"Hey guys, Ashley's hungry, we'll be back." Chris said.
I sighed heavily.
"Do you really not want to be around me that bad?" Mike asked.
I looked away.
"Sam please. I'm sorry I made you feel like I didn't care about you. I do." He explained. It already meant a lot that he cared enough to reassure me.
"It's not that I didn't feel cared about. I just, I really like you and I don't want to get hurt."
Mike pushed a piece of my hair back behind my ear. "I could never hurt you."
I laid my head on his chest. He held my right hand with his left.
-
Mike had thought to himself in that moment.
The girls he dated were always mean or dumb, or both. Sam is smart, brave, and a good person in general. She cares about what he thinks. He could see himself loving her and he wasn't going to lose her because of his own problems.
-
When Mike and I had gotten off the farris wheel, I felt more comfortable next to him. Ashley and Chris came back with hotdogs.
"Hm you two seem to be in a better mood." Chris observed.
"Shut up, let's go sit down." I said.
After I finished my hotdog, Mike, Ashley, and Chris continued talking. I noticed Jessica in the distance.
I went to tell Mike before she motioned for me to come over.
"I'm going to use the bathroom. I'll be back." I stood up from the table.
"Do you want me to come?" Mike asked.
"I'll be fine." I smiled before walking away.
"Come back here, I don't want Mike seeing me here." Jess said.
"Why-" I started before seeing Matt at a claw machine.
"I see." I crossed my arms, "What did you need?"
"Did you get a call from the police department too?"
"What? No, I had to get a new phone. What's going on?" I questioned.
"They want us to go back to identify the wendigos for them!" She informed me.
"What!" I said loudly.
"Lower your voice. Are you going or what?" Jess asked again.
"I don't know. It's too dangerous." I stated.
"Didn't Mike tell you?"
"No."
"So, you guys are a thing now?" She raised her eyebrows.
"What, Jess no." I lied.
"No need to lie Sam. I saw the way he looked at you when you got up and walked away."
"I'm sorry. You're still my friend, even if you don't consider me yours."
"Of course we're still friends." She laughed.
"Plus, I really like Matt. I can't believe Emily treated him the way she did. He's a really good boyfriend." I had never seen Jessica blush before.
"Maybe he's the one." I shrugged my shoulders.
"Yeah, maybe." She looked over at Matt.
"Well, you should get back to them." She pointed to Mike, Ashley, and Chris.
I nodded and she pulled me into a very unexpected hug.
"Be safe." When we let go, she walked away and I made my way back to Mike.
