One Week Later

George's POV

"George, It's been a week and he hasn't woken up. We have to call his mom!" Sapnap shouted outside the blonde boy's hospital room.

George knew this was going to happen. Sapnap would want to contact Clay's mom, as most people would think to do in a situation like this. That's why George had done what he did. He waited for a night where Sapnap passed out early, which was hard because of George's nightmares and Clay's condition, and he approached the doctor who was on Clay's case. He explained briefly how Sapnap didn't and couldn't  know that Clay's mom was no longer alive. The Doctor agreed to just say he couldn't reach Clay's mom at this point in time. Wasn't a lie, just wasn't the whole truth.

"Sapnap, the doctor has already tried and she hasn't been reachable. She probably has no cell service. Plus, by the time she is back Clay will be awake and at home so it'll all be okay!" George rebutted, turning to walk back into the depressing room before Sapnap grabbed his arm to stop him from fully entering the room.

"We don't know that though, do we?" Sapnap whispered, his voice cracking and his eyes fighting back tears.

"He's gonna be fine." George yanked his arm back and walked into the room.

As far as George's nightmares, he was still having them. Nightly. Sapnap tried his best to stay awake longer than George to monitor him, but George always woke up to a sound asleep Sapnap and a still unconscious Clay. Sometimes he would rather stay asleep in his nightmares than wake up to the one he was actually living. He had a routine at this point for when he woke up in the hospital. He would always shoot upright when he woke up, his breath heavy and his skin salty from sweat. His next move, more like an instinct by now, was to get up and walk over to Clay. His boyfriend. Although he wasn't awake or really there to help him, it helped to look at him and hold his hand. In the dark, you couldn't see the scars and bruises painting the boy's fragile skin.

George had also started doing something different when he would wake up. He bought a journal, originally just to organize his thoughts throughout the day. It ended up with a different, more useful purpose though. He used it to write down his nightmares. When he would first wake up and remember it all, or at least most of it, he would pull out the notebook and write as much as he could as the memories and flashes faded from his mind. He hadn't really been successful with this yet. He would always forget pretty much everything by the time he remembered about this nightmare journal. It was progress nonetheless. Last night was his most successful attempt. Night four of trying. He was able to write this down...

[Night Four.

-running from something...no, to something

-Flatline

-Lost

-Crying

-Gunshots]

That was all he got, but he was able to assume the basis of it.

Running to someone, they die, I'm sad, someone kills me.

The nightmares seemed to be worse than he initially thought. It was somehow more scary actually knowing this information. Deep down George knew though. This was an important step in recovering. An important step to being free from his own mind.

Two Days Later

George and Sapnap ran into the hospital as quick as they could. They had been in school since break was now over. Sapnap's mom had promised to check in with Clay  on her work breaks by calling in to the hospital. This time, she called seconds before a code blue was called to Clay's room. When the boys found this out in the middle of their sixth class of the day they didn't hesitate to leave the hellish building.
