*Monroe's POV*
Lolly's is only a few streets over from the school. We probably could have walked, but whatever. I park my bike beside Maddy and the two girls get out and run over to my bike and Maddy says, "This has gotta be the coolest motorcycle I've ever seen! You are such a badass! This is not what I pictured when you said motorcycle. God I'm jealous."
"I can teach you how to ride it someday if you want to."
Her mouth pops open and then she hugs me abruptly and says, "Yes please!" I hug her back and smile. When she releases me I look to Charlie and say, "The same goes for you if you wanna learn."
She looks at the bike apprehensively and then back at me before saying, "I don't know. Maybe."
"You know I won't be offended if you say no. No pressure, yeah?"
She nods and then Maddy links our arms together and leads us into the shop.
I decide on cookie dough ice cream and have the lady squeeze as many different chocolates as she can into the bowl. I do a little happy dance when she hands me the bowl after I've paid and I go join Maddy and Charlie at one of the little tables on the patio. They have both also stacked their ice cream with chocolate. I can already tell we're going to get along just fine. I take a spoonful, holding the spoon in front of me I say, "Cheers to new friends, new beginnings and, most importantly, ice cream smothered in chocolate."
"Cheers!" they reply and we clink our spoons together before we burst out laughing and dig into our ice cream. After a few bites, Maddy asks, "So, how did you convince your parents to get you a motorcycle? There's no way my mom would EVER allow that."
I take my time swallowing my bite of ice cream and contemplate my answer. I feel like I can trust these girls, but I also don't want to get into it too much and ruin the afternoon. I might as well just be honest with them though, "My parents are both dead, so it's just me. But it's fine though, it's been just me for a while. I got emancipated when I was 16."
"Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to-" I cut her off and say, "No, seriously, it's fine. It was bound to come up eventually," I say with a shrug. I take another bite of ice cream and then say, "So, other than ice cream, what is there to do around here?"
Just like that, the hint of sympathy in their eyes is gone and I feel myself relax. Mady starts with saying, "Well there's obviously the beach and a mall, a movie theater, classic stuff. If you're feeling adventurous, the drive into San Francisco is only about 40 minutes. Whereabouts is your house? Is it close?"
"Not really. My property is about a 15 minute drive east of here."
"East? There's nothing east of here," Maddy says with a chuckle.
"That's the point. I bought 2 acres of land in the middle of nowhere and had a house built on it. I'm not a fan of neighbours."
"Aren't you from New York? Everyone practically lives on top of each other there," Charlie comments.
"Yeah, exactly. I picked half moon bay for three reasons: 1) no winter, 2) it's on the opposite side of the country from New York and 3) I can be close to a city and still have no neighbours."
They both nod and continue picking at the bottom of their bowls. Once we've all finished, we continue talking for a while and by the time I check my watch I realize it's almost 5pm.
"Shit, sorry guys I gotta go. My dogs are going to be expecting me to feed them soon."
Maddy perks up at this and says, "You have dogs?! What kind? I love dogs!"
I grin and say, "yeah, I have two rottweilers. Bear and Kobe. They're my giant babies."
"Can we see pictures?" She asks excitedly. I pull out my phone and scroll to a picture of them cuddling in my bed. I see her eyes melt as she looks at the pictures. She then shows it to Charlie and they let out a collective "Awww."
"Maybe if you guys aren't too busy this weekend you guys could come by my place and meet them?"
They both say "Yes!" at the same time and I laugh. I see Maddy typing something into my phone before she hands it back. I see that she's added her number and texted herself. I smile and then make a group text chat. I see Maddy typing something and then get a notification saying: "Maddy has changed the group name to: Bitches <3." I let out a laugh before turning around to walk away. I shout, "See you tomorrow bitches!" over my shoulder. I find myself grinning the whole way home.
