*Monroe's POV*
Once both teams are filled, we get in position, and I make sure to spread out our weaker players. Since I picked first, Parker's team served first. It goes straight to Cade, who bumps it to Xander. He volleys it and calls out my name so I run up from the back middle and spike it straight into a clear gap. As I walk past Xander he holds his fist out and says, "Nice spike."
I fist bump him and reply, "Nice volley." As I turn back to the front, I just barely catch the glare Cade sends Xander and Xander's shrug in return. What's that about? I decide to ignore it and focus on winning. The teams are much more evenly matched this time so we had to work a lot harder for the win, but in the end we still came out on top.
When we score the final point Everyone yells out in celebration and I suddenly find myself trapped in a giant group bear hug of sweaty boys.
I try squeezing myself out but they just hug me tighter. "You guys are disgusting," I say, unable to control the smile on my face. Xander sticks his tongue out at me and I roll my eyes playfully. Everyone else starts heading to the locker rooms but Xander stops me and says, "So, are you going to Mackenzie's thing Saturday?"
I shrug and say, "Maybe. I have to check with my friends first. Are you guys going?" I peak at Cade quickly trying to gage his thoughts on the matter, but his eyes don't give anything away. Xander narrows his eyes playfully and says, "That depends, are you more or less likely to go if I say we'll be there?"
I laugh and say, "Oh no, I'm not playing this game."
He smiles and says, "Fine you win, we'll be there."
"Okay, then." I look back towards the bleachers and see Charlie looking at me with a weird expression. I turn back to Xander and Cade and say, "Well Charlie is waiting for me, so I had better get going." I wave awkwardly and then walk over to Charlie.
When I get to her, she gives me a look and says, "What was that about?"
I shrug and say, "They were just asking about that party Saturday and I told them I wasn't sure yet. Why?"
"It's just that you should be careful around them. They're notorious players and they're into some pretty shady stuff."
I smile at her and say, "Don't worry, I'm not gonna do anything stupid. I had them pegged as soon as the first cocky smirk crossed their faces."
"Okay, if you're sure," she says with a small smile.
We meet up with Maddy at our lockers and I bring up the party on Saturday. Instantly, Maddy looks uncomfortable and starts picking at her nails before she says, "I don't think Mackenzie wants me there. She's kind of the reason I lost everything."
I look at Charlie and then back to Maddy with a curious expression. Maddy sighs and says, "Well I suppose you're going to find out sooner or later so you might as well hear it from me. Not here though. Let's go take a walk."
We go outside and start taking a walk around the track surrounding the football field as Maddy starts explaining. "Alright so, I guess I'll start at the beginning. So Mackenzie and I used to be best friends growing up. We did everything together including cheerleading. At the beginning of 11th grade, it was starting to become clear that I was a better cheerleader than her and I know it made her jealous. A few weeks into the year, Grant asked me out and we started casually dating, which pissed Mackenzie off because, unbeknownst to me, she wanted Grant to herself. Fast forward a couple months and the cheerleading coach told me that she was thinking of making me captain for our senior year. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. Mackenzie got so jealous that she went behind my back, seduced Grant and spread rumours around school that I was cheating on him with a bunch of the guys from the football team. All the girls on the cheer squad turned on me. Within a week I lost my boyfriend, my best friend, my chance at Captain and my reputation was shredded. Everyone is too afraid of Mackenzie to say anything to her so nobody wanted to risk being associated with me. Well, until you came along."
"Wow, what a snake. You know what we have to do right?" I stop walking and both of them turn to face me with confused looks on their faces. "Payback. That bitch deserves to get knocked off her throne. The first step: going to that party on Saturday."
"How will that help?" Maddy asks.
"Well, not going is basically admitting defeat. We're going to show up looking hot and confident as fuck and show everyone that we're not afraid of her."
Maddy nods and says, "Yeah, okay. I like it. You in Charlie?"
"Um, I guess I am yeah," she nods shyly.
"So, here's what I'm thinking: we meet up at my house Saturday afternoon to get ready, go to this party together and then if you guys want you can crash at my place after since I don't have any parents to yell at us for being out too late drinking. What do you guys think?"
"Sounds perfect!" Maddy says.
"Alright, it's settled then! Operation Payback is a go," I say with a conspiratorial grin.
