*Monroe's POV*
As we walk up to the front door, I say, "So, fair warning, Bear and Kobe are a little affectionate, so I apologize in advance if you get slobbered on."
"Oh my gosh, I am so excited to meet them!" Charlie says.
I open the door and sure enough, the two dogs are all over Maddy and Charlie although they don't seem to mind one bit as they both kneel down and start scratching and hugging the dogs. I can't tell which of them is most excited about this situation.
"Alright, so you guys can leave your shoes in the closet here," I say gesturing to the door on my right. "The basement is just down those stairs," I say pointing to my left. "I'll show you that after I show you to your rooms. We have the dining room right in front of us and then the kitchen to the right of that, and the living room is just on the other side of this closet.
I lead them to the hallway between the kitchen and dining room that leads to all the bedrooms. "So those are the guest rooms on this side of the hallway, my room is right across, and there's a bathroom right here. I say pointing everything out as we go. Charlie claims the room right across from mine, leaving the one across the bathroom to Maddy. They throw their bags down and I go and grab my drink from the coffee table.
"Alright, shall we go downstairs and get this party started?" They nod and I lead them down to the basement. They both immediately run over to the back window and check out the backyard. "Woah, you have a pool too?! We are definitely throwing a pool party at some point," Maddy says before adding, "I mean, if that's cool with you, it is your house and all."
"Yeah sure, sounds fun," I say with a smile. They turn around and check out the gym.
"Do you use all this stuff?" Charlie asks.
"Yep, everyday before school," I reply.
"Now that's motivation," Maddy says with a chuckle.
"Alright, what do you guys wanna drink?" I ask while topping up my whiskey.
"What are you drinking?" Charlie asks.
"Whiskey."
"Well yeah, but whiskey with what?"
I laugh and say, "Just whiskey." They both pull a face and I ask, "Well what do you guys normally drink?"
They both just shrug and Maddy says, "Whatever is around."
"Alright, I have an idea." They both look at me, slightly concerned and I say, "Don't worry, you'll like it." I quickly mix up a couple of drinks as they continue to look around and when I hand them each one I say, "Cheers to a good night bitches," They smile and say, "Cheers!" and then we all take a sip. Both of their eyes light up and Maddy says, "Holy shit, this is incredible. What is it?"
"It's called sex on the beach. It's orange juice, cranberry juice, vodka and peach schnapps."
"Well, then I guess I just discovered that I love sex on the beach," She replies with a wink and all three of us burst out laughing. We all go over to sit on the couch and Charlie turns to me and says, "Can I ask you something?"
"Yeah of course."
"I don't wanna sound insensitive, but I'm curious. How can you afford all of this? I mean it's highly unusual for a high school student to afford this kind of house." I hesitate and she continues, "Don't feel obligated to answer, you can tell me if my question is out of line or whatever."
"No, no it's fine. I trust you guys and I want to answer any questions you might have, because I know my situation is a bit....unorthodox. Long story short, after my dad died, I was his only living relative so I inherited everything including his company. It's actually why I had to take a year off school; to handle the mess my dad left me. Because of all my dad's shady dealings, amongst other things, selling the company and dealing with the backlash of all his scandals was a nightmare. The money was the only good thing I got out of being my fathers daughter. I used it to change my name, move across the country, have this house built and leave my past behind me."
I give them a minute to process this information. I intentionally leave out the less savoury details of my mother and father's deaths and about how much of a monster my father truly was. I'm just not really ready to talk about that yet. I'm not sure I ever will be.
"Wow, that's crazy. I can't believe you went through all that," Charlie says.
"Yeah, it was a lot to deal with, but hey, it's not all bad. If that shit hadn't happened, I probably never would have met you guys!" I say, trying to bring the conversation back to a less depressing topic. They grin back at me and Maddy suggests we play some pool.
