*Cade's POV*
Several days pass and Monroe still has not made an appearance at school. I know I fucked up, but I don't feel like it warrants this extreme of a reaction. I text her and call her multiple times. I try to get to her through her friends but even they won't speak to me. Mackenzie becomes unbearable at school, acting like she has some kind of claim on me, hanging around me any chance she gets.
When Friday comes around, I decide I'm going to speak with her whether she wants to or not. When she doesn't show up to school, I decide to go to her house. When I get there, I find her garage open as she works on her jeep. I walk up and say, "Hey."
She instantly rolls out from underneath it and says, "What the fuck do you want?"
"I want to tell you I'm sorry."
"Sorry for what exactly Cade?"
As she says that I see a tall blonde guy come out from under her Jeep.
"Who the fuck is this?" I ask, seething.
"This is Matt." She offers no further explanation.
Matt wraps his hand around her waist and pulls her into his side protectively.
"I take it you're Cade," he says; his face a mask of indifference.
"Yes," I reply, still seething.
"If you don't mind, we've got work to do," he says. I glance at her but she's clinging onto him like he's a lifeline and looking at me with hurt clear on her face.
I take a deep breath before deciding to let it go for now. She needs more time.
*Monroe's POV*
It's been 4 days since I've been to school. I spend most of my waking hours at the gym with Matt. I make sure to call Charlie and Maddy everyday so that they won't send a search party.
I really like spending time with Matt. He understands me in a way that nobody else does and I find myself relying on him for support. I mention that I have to go home and work on the Jeep and he offers to lend a hand, so he asks Jordan if he can take off early and follows me home.
Cade showing up is a complete surprise but when Matt wraps his arm around me, I can't find it in myself to stop him. I like Matt a lot. Him and I have been through shit and he just gets me. Not once have I found pity in his eyes and not once has he treated me like I'm broken even though he knows more about me than anyone else here.
