*Monroe's POV*
It's wednesday morning which means I'm almost halfway through my first week of senior year. As I'm running and watching the sun come up, I find my mind drifting to the strange boy from philosophy. Several times over the last two days, I've caught him watching me. He was such a douche-bag in philosophy on Monday but then yesterday he compliments my bike? What is his deal? I shake my head and focus on clearing my mind.
The school day passes relatively quickly; until I get to philosophy. The boy sits down beside me once again and flashes me a smile that I'm sure usually has girls drooling at his feet. I have to admit, he is attractive with a sharp jawline, forest green eyes, full lips and brown hair that somehow looks intentional but also messy at the same time. But, I am all too familiar with this type of guy and how they work. They draw girls in with their dangerous and mysterious aura, use them for sex and the discard them like a used tissue the next morning. I would bet he's slept with at least half the girls in this school, and I'm not about to become one of them. I roll my eyes and try to ignore him but he says, "Hey."
I raise an eyebrow and look over to him and say, "hello."
"I don't believe we've officially met. I'm Cade Gryffon." He sticks his hand out to me and I eye it before shaking it quickly, trying to ignore the tingle in my skin when our hands make contact, and reply, "Monroe."
He smiles and says, "I know who you are." Well that's a bit creepy.
I raise my eyebrow again and he continues, "I mean, everyone does. You made quite a splash on your first day with the whole Grant thing and then the whole Carl thing." I look into his eyes to try and gage his opinion on it.
I can't read anything in his features so I decide to put out a feeler and say, "Are you friends with them or something?" He recoils a little in disgust before saying, "Wow, I'm actually offended by that. No, those pricks deserved it." Hm. Interesting. Before I can say anything else the teacher walks in.
After class, I go find Charlie and we make our way to PE together. Coming out of the changeroom I see Cade standing there and a small girl with fake blonde hair is hanging off his arm. His eyes flicker over to me and he removes his arm from her grasp. She turns around and starts coming towards Charlie and I. What does she want?
She looks me up and down as though sizing me up before saying, "Hi there! I'm Mackenzie, although I'm sure you've heard of me already."
"No not really," I reply, leaving my expression blank. I see anger flash in her eyes but the fake smile stays plastered on her face. Two-faced bitch. She continues with, "Well anyway, I'm having a party this weekend and everyone is going to be there so you should totally come!"
"Can I bring people?"
Her eyes twitch to Charlie briefly and she hesitates before replying, "Of course you can!"
I look towards Charlie and she just shrugs at me so I say, "I'll think about it."
"Okay, well don't think too hard, it's going to be a lot of fun!" she says before bouncing away and taking a seat on the bleachers.
I turn to Charlie to ask for more information on this Mackenzie girl but Coach Woods blows his whistle before I get the chance.
"Alright folks, seeing as how the last two days have been a bit one-sided, we're going to switch up the teams a bit. So, Monroe and Parker, you're our new team captains. Rock paper scissors for first pick."
Excuse me? I hide my shock quickly and a tall boy with blonde hair and kind brown eyes comes up to me and I assume this is Parker. He was playing on the other side the last two days and is easily the best spiker in the class. I win first pick and I look out to examine my options.
I already know my first pick but I don't know anybody's names. I point to the tall athletic guy with dark hair standing next to Cade. He was on my team these last two days and him and I worked well together on the court. He shoots Cade a smug look before he grins at me and walks over.
"Sorry, I don't think I know your name," I say when he reaches me.
"It's Xander," he replies with a smile.
Parker picks someone called Jason who was on my old team and has a really strong serve. I should probably get a strong server too. I point to the shy looking asian kid in the back. He doesn't look it but he's fast and I remember him being good at strategically placing his serves. He looks surprised when I pick him and smiles widely at me. He introduces himself as Evan.
Parker calls out a guy named Brett, another tall jacked dude. How have I not noticed how many attractive, well-built guys there are in this class before? I guess it makes sense for the athletic guys to all choose a PE class. It's an easy grade. I look at the group in front of me before looking back at Xander and Evan and say, "Any suggestions?"
Xander leans down to me and says, "Cade and I play well as a team, but it's up to you." I make eye contact with Cade. His smirk almost makes me change my mind, but I'm too competitive to not choose a good player out of spite so I say, "Cade." He strides over and fist bumps Xander. I hope I don't regret that choice.
