"This food looks amazing, Demi," I said to Logan's wife.
It really did. I only had the ability to cook soup, canned chili, and spaghetti. So her lasagna and homemade bread made my mouth water.
"Well, we're celebrating, " Demi said. "You graduate from the academy next week. It's so exciting!"
"Well, it's not like I'm growing a human," I said, pointing at Demi's tiny little baby bump. She giggled and Logan glared at me.
"Dude don't flirt with my wife," Logan scolded.
"Stop it," Demi said. "We're having a nice time."
"Anyways," Logan said. "Aaron, you're the last single guy left. I doubt that will ask once you get that uniform."
"I'm not the dating type," I said. "I'm think I'm going to be single forever."
"Yeah right," Logan laughed. "Dude, you're not the lone wolf. You're husband material. "
"Logan," Demi chided. "If Aaron wants to be single it's his choice. "
"All I know is this," Logan said. "Marriage is awesome. This woman, god, she's a saint. And we're going to have a baby boy soon. I'm so happy it hurts."
"I know, " I said. "I just...it's not always so simple."
"How is jailbait? " Logan asked.
"I don't know," I said. "I'm giving her some space."
"Space?" Logan said. "Is that code for radio silence?"
"Maybe," I said begrudgingly.
"You should at least get her a birthday present," Demi said. "She's eighteen today. No more jailbait, technically. "
"How do you know it's Beth's birthday," I asked. I didn't know that.
"Demi reads Amgela Mcnarie ' s blog," Logan said. "So, also, if you could get my wife an autograph.""It's Beth's birthday..." I said. "I should get her a present. What could I get her?"
"I sell jewelry for private parties," Demi said. "Take a look at the collection. It's on the house."
"Seriously, " I asked.
"Of course," Demi said. "But you'll need to hurry. Your ride along starts in two hours. Let's get started!"
I shook my head. Demi reminded me of my sisters, meddlesome and too sweet to chastise. But it was nice. Ten minutes later, I had a necklace with a heart shaped ruby on the end. I worried it might seem a bit too romantic, but Demi insisted.
I got in my car and picked up some flowers, a card, and a nice gift box on the way. Was this appropriate? I didn't know. I did know I wanted to see Beth smile on her birthday, if she didn't kill me for all the unreturned phone calls first. I drove over to the Mcnaries and knocked on the door, my heart racing. What was I doing? She had a boyfriend. She had a father who'd kill me.
The door was opened and Bryan, Beth's older brother answered.
"Security dude," Bryan said sleepily. "Aaron, right?"
"Right, " I said. "Is Beth here?"
"No man," Bryan said. "My parents are out of town for some fashion show. And Beth is off with her friends on her birthday. "
"Oh," I said. "I brought Beth a present."
"I'll give it to her," Bryan said.
"Thanks man," I said. "See you around."
