Jason and I sat on the bleachers by the football field. I picked up my sandwich, sighing. Last day of high school.
"Why are we sitting out here again?" I asked.
"Because we broke up with Noah and Emily, and we're avoiding them."
"Right. You didn't have to punch Noah."
"I did," Jason said. "He deserved it. Besides, Emily and I were on borrowed time anyways."
"How so, " I asked.
"Because I'm not in love with her," Jason said. "And I'm not, as Emily accused me, in love with you. I love Mel, I still do. It sucks."
"I'm sorry," I said.
"Don't be," Jason said. "Your little affair with officer good body got me out of a night in jail. You're my favorite for end right now. "
"I'm your only friend, " I said.
"Only one I need," Jason laughed.
I smiled, glad I was with him today.
"No sex tape this year, right? "
"Right," Jason said. "I'm reformed."
"So you're going to Europe solo, huh?"
"Yep," Jason said. "Unless you want to come. Bring Aaron. I'll pick up some euro chick and we can party. "
"No," I said. "I'm auditing a class at Berkeley run by a former director of the FBI."
"Fancy, " Jason said.
Before we could keep talking, we were interrupted. Mel, walking out onto the bleachers, was crying. I loved the girl, bit she sounded like a dying walrus when she cried. Jason perked up, and she looked at us with a hint of regret.
"I didn't know anyone was here," she said. "I'll leave. "
"No," Jason said. "Stay and talk. What's wrong. "
"Nothing you two can fix," she sighed.
"Mel," I said. "We both love you. Sit down. Talk."
"Buck dumped me," she cried. "And I'm pregnant."
"Wow," I said. "Good to know he still can't use a condom."
"You told him you were pregnant and he dumped you," Jason asked.
"He told me to have an abortion, because he wasn't paying me any money. I'm really scared. I might have to have an abortion. "
"Is that what you want?" Jason asked.
"No," Mel cried, sitting down. "But I can raise this baby alone. I'm so stupid. "
"Mel, no," I said. "Look, it happens. The truth is...Buck got me pregnant too."
"What?" She asked. "When?"
"Freshman year, " I said. "It's why I went to see him the night I caught him cheating. It's why I spiraled into some dark places after. I had an abortion. I was terrified and impulsive. I regretted it. Whatever choice you make needs to be yours Mel, don't act out of fear."
"I didn't know any of that beth," Jason said.
"No one did. I haven't admitted it out loud before." I said.
"I'm scared," Mel said. "I'm don't want to have a baby all alone."
"What if you weren't alone?" Jason asked.
"What if I had a million dollars or a time machine, " Mel asked. "I am alone."
"But you don't have to be," Jason said. "I'd...I would be there for you, if you allowed me."
