It was official; Aaron was going to say I told you so.
That was if this lady didn't kill me first. This dirty, homeless woman grabbed and pinned me down, holding a knife over my neck. I suddenly felt my breath with draw from my lungs. I froze.
"Scream and I slice your throat," she whispered.
I didn't say anything. I didn't move.
"Bethanny? " Aaron called out.
I silently prayed he trusted his instincts. My privacy be damned, I needed him.
"Where is he?" The woman asked.
"Who?" I whispered.
"The overlord," she said. "I know everything. You evil vile creatures, snatching bodies. I won't tell the president you're one of them if you show me the overlord."
"The overlord," I said. "You're. ..you're Brittany. You dated my dad."
"Did the over lord tell you that?" She yelled.
This chick was crazy with an extra side of tin foil hats. The door swung open and Aaron's eyes met mine. He'd once said he'd take a bullet for me, and right now, that terrified me. I didn't need us both dying today.
He just paused, assessing the situation silently.
"Tell me where he is," Britney screamed. "Or I'll kill the girl."
"Ok," Aaron said. "I'll tell you if you put your knife down."
"Liar!" She said. "Your playing with my mind. Aren't you?"
Aaron took a step closer, slowly. Britney didn't seem to notice.
"You're one of us," Britney cried. "How can you help this thing? She's not even human!"
"I know, " Aaron said.
What?"What?" Britney said, letting go just a bit. I took in a deep breath at the opportunity.
"I know she's an alien," Aaron said calmly. "They're everywhere. Her mother's one too."
My heart pumped. He was feeding her delusions, getting her to let her gaurd down. It was a dangerous game, but it was my only shot. He couldn't attack her because one wrong move could kill me. He had to be smarter than her insanity.
"I know you've been told your crazy," Aaron said. He took a step forward. "But the others, they don't hear the voices. We hear the voices."
"We do," she said. "We know they're here to take over."
"And kill the president," Aaron said.
"Yes!"
"But this alien," Aaron said. "She's helping us. She feels the guilt. She is on our side."
"How do you know?"
"I just do," Aaron said. "I hear it. "
"She could betray us," Britney said.
Aaron took a step forward again. He was within reaching distance.
"She won't," Aaron said. "I know it's wrong. But I love her, this little alien. I love her so much. Please don't kill her. I'll help you, just let her go."
Aaron's eyes got slighty teary and I felt a new kind of fear. Did he mean this? I mean, I was no alien obviously. But did he love me, with the kind of conviction where he'd shed tears? And now I was going to get murdered.
"You love her," Britney said.
Aaron nodded and much to my surprise she released me, pushing me forward. I fell down on the ground, gasping for air. Aaron stepped forward, attempting to take the knife from Britney. Sure, she had released me but she still could strike. Aaron's arm moved forward and Britney reacted quickly, slicing his arm open.
"Aaron!" I screamed.
He didn't flinch, despite the bloody arm thay must have been burning. Filled with adrenaline, he pushed Britney back and easily flipped her back, pining her to the ground as she crumpled beneath his strength. He pulled out a pair of hand cuffs with his good arm and began to cuff her. He still sat on top of the tiny woman's back, not wanting to give her an edge to get away.
I glanced at the knife on the ground, covered in Aaron's blood. Shit.
"Beth, go get help. "
"I'm not leaving you! Youre bleeding!"
"Beth, I don't give a damn about my arm. You get back on the bus now. That's an order!"
"I'm don't take orders!" I cried, tears falling. "I'm not leaving you."
I pulled off my shirt, which was an bit embarassing. I had a tank top on underneath though. I put my shirt on his cut, applying pressure. I then pulled the tie out of my hair and used to to wrap around his wrist to hold it down. There was so much blood so fast. I had to keep pressure on it to stop the blood.
I hear voices outside and knew that my parents were coming. Maybe they'd heard the screams, or maybe like Aaron they had some intuition about my dangerous situation. I knew one thing, it'd be alright.
"My parents are coming, " I said. "My dad will hold her down unto the cops come."
"Alien scum," Britney muttered.
"I'm going to work on your wrist, " I said. "We have a first aid kit on the bus. You might need stitches."
"Go get your parents Beth," he said.
"I'm not going to stop putting pressure on your cut, you'll bleed more Aaron. "
"I'm feel fine," he said.
He was going into shock. Blood was everywhere. This wasn't good.
"Stay with me, " I said as a tear fell down my face."Sure thing Beth," he said.
I don't know what came over me, the intensity of the moment and Aaron saving my life, but I lost it. I pulled him forward and kissed him on the lips, and he just sort of let it happen. He must have been out of it.
"I love you, Aaron, " I whispered. "Don't fade away on me."
My parents rushed in right as Aaron fell away into unconsciousness.
