Chapter 31
Lightningfrost looked up into Hawksouls glowing green eyes. Her heart was pounding in her chest, butterflies were in her stomach. He smiled at her softly, his eyes full of lust. Finches sang around them, their songs echoed around the mountain. The pain in her back leg seemed to have eased off.
"Hawksoul-" she began but he cut her off.
"Sorry if I came on to strong" he stuttered, his ears were burning red. The tabby tom needed the ground in embarrassment with his large paws. She smiled, she lifted her head to his ear. Her sweet breath made his heart quicken.
"I love you too" Lightningfrost said slowly. He looked at her, his green eyes looked into her blue ones. She touched his nose with his. He let out a loud purr.
"Let's go" he then said. The wind had picked up, Lightningfrost nodded and continued up the mountain.

They were now almost to the top of the mountain. Lightningfrost turned her head to look behind her. Automatically her eyes narrowed against the strength of the wind, tears started to form in her eyes. The wind tugged on her thick, long fur. Quickly, she slid out her metallic black claws to get a better grip on the eroding rocks. As they had gotten further up the mountain small mounds of snow has formed on the rocks making it harder to climb up. Lightningfrost could see vast amounts of trees, mostly pine. Different shades of green illuminated in the sun light, the bright blue sky making the view all the more beautiful. She could just about see the sea and the golden sands glimmering. Her whiskers were flattened against her face, taking the shape of her cheek bones.
"It's beautiful isn't it?" Hawksoul said loudly over the wind. Lightningfrost flicked her ear.
"Let's find shelter" she said. The tom dipped his head and the two cats continued to treck along the mountain looking for a den. Lightningfrost started to think about River and the kits, she unsheathed her claws at the thought of any harm coming to them.
"Lightningfrost, I found a cave" Hawksoul snapped her out of her thoughts. She looked at over to were he stood. The large tabby stood infront of a narrow, jagged stone mouth. She parted her jaws to taste the air, all she could pick up was the scent of the forest and rabbits.
"I will take a look" she said, slowly she stalked towards the entrance. Her muscles tensed as she got closer. A cold breeze oozed from the mouth of the cave, there was no sign of any predators. She took a few paw steps in, a dark gloom engulfed them. She flicked her tail as she walked in, Hawksoul then followed her in. His breath was on the tip of her tail, she continued the whinding descent down into the stomach of the cave. It soon opened up, Lightningfrost walked around the edge sizing up the cave.
"It's a good size, we will stay here until sunrise" she said. Hawksoul smiled.
"I will gather some moss, I saw some a little way down the mountain" he said.
"Then I shall hunt" Lightningfrost walked past him and out of the cave. Outside the entrance she marked her scent to ward off any passing cats, not that any cat is stupid to come up this high into the mountains she thought. Once again she parted her jaws. She caught the fresh scent of a hare. Instinctively she kept low to the ground, her thick fur protected her under belly from the sharp rock face. The scent was a little way down the mountain. Carefully she stalked down until she saw it. A large male hare was munching on some dead grass. He was bigger than she thought, it could feed her and Hawksoul for two sunrises. She got closer, the hares head shot up. The wind was blowing towards it.
"Mouse-dung!" She hissed quietly. Her tail hit a small rock, it tumbled down the side of the mountain. The hare ran, Lightningfrost sprinted after it. The hares powerful legs gave it an advantage. She jumped over the rocks and swiftly chased after it like a MeadowClan warrior. Lightningfrost had a plan, she started to run up the mountain more until she was slightly above the hare. Now she was a fox length away from it. She was starting to run out of energy. The she-cat bunched up her muscles and leapt for the hare. She landed squarely on his shoulders. The hare shrieked and tumbled. Her weight stopped it from falling down the mountain. Sinking her long teeth into its neck the hare started to kick. Her jaw locked, the strength of it was started to crunch bone. Her claws sliced into it to help keep it still. Soon it went weak. She let go and looked around. The she dragged it up to the cave.
"Couldn't you have tried to make a cleaner kill?" Hawksoul chuckled. Lightningfrost looked down at her self. Her white chest and under belly was stained with blood. Her white paw was now red, her black paws were crimson. She flicked her tail and went to her nest. The soft moss felt good on her cracked pads.
"Eat up" she yawned, Hawksoul took a large bite of the hare.
"Wow, thiz tastes amazuing" he said with a mouth full of dripping flesh. Lightningfrost stood up and took a large bite. The sweet blood quenched her thirst and the flesh was tender. It tastes better than a fresh forest mouse. They both ate their fill and settled in their nests.
"What do you think will happen? Tomorrow I mean" Hawksoul asked grooming himself. Lightningfrost hadn't thought about it, it didn't worry her. All she wanted to do was get back to DarkClan.
"I have no idea, let's get some rest" she said. She settled down. Hawksoul rested his head on her back. Lightningfrost thought of Hawkfrost, she thought of what could have been. But her love for Hawksoul was stronger, she had focused on the other bird in the sky...
