Chapter 4

Smokestorm bounded up to Lightningfrost with Flamespark, Greydawn, Thistlehawk, Riverlight and Sunsky following close behind.

"We are ready." Smokestorm said looking at his clanmates who nodded their heads.

"Right then let's get going, Shadowmoon!" Lightningfrost called. The black and golden brindle tabby looked up from the mouse that she was eating.

"Tell Shadestar we have gone after that fox!" She instructed. Shadowmoon left her mouse and ran into the medicine cats den. Lightningfrost flicked her tail for her patrol to follow. The group of skilled warriors bounded out of the camp.

When they were in the forest Lightningfrost tasted the air. The scent of fox and blood hit the roof of her mouth.

"The fox has gone this way before." Lightningfrost informed the others, flicking her tail in the direction the fox went.

Greydawn tasted the air, "Are you sure?" The grey tom asked, his eyes narrowed. Lightningfrost glared at him. Smokestorm tasted the air, the dark grey tom narrowed his amber eyes as well.

"All I can smell is Troutpools blood, not a fox" Smokestorm said. Greydawn nodded to Smokestorm and grinned at Lightningfrost.

"Well as I'm the deputy we do as I say, if you have a problem with that Greydawn you can take that up with Shadestar. Do I make myself clear?" Lightningfrost said calmly. Sunsky and Thistlehawk grinned. Greydawn narrowed his eyes and lashed his tail side to side. Lightningfrost continued to lead the patrol towards the scent of the fox.

She narrowed her blue eyes as she was deep in thought, how come they couldn't smell the fox?

She shook her head to get rid of them thoughts and tried to focus on finding the fox.

"Lightningfrost, may I speak with you?" Flamespark mumbled, trotting up to her. She narrowed her eyes at the ginger tabby. She slowed down to let Riverlight take the lead.

"Riverlight, you carry on and lead the patrol. Flamespark wants to speak with me." Lightningfrost told the silver tabby.

"Sure thing Lightningfrost!" Riverlight said while tasting the air. Lightningfrost and Flamespark stopped.

"What is it you want to talk to me about?" She asked. Flamespark sat down and looked at his paws. He let out a sigh.

"I don't want to fight the fox. I'm scared" he said quietly. He looked up at her with fear in his amber eyes. Lightningfrost sat down and wrapped her tail around her paws. She forced back a sigh. She couldn't blame the young tom, after seeing the state of his mother.

"Flamespark I understand that you afraid after the wounds inflicted on Troutpool but you're a warrior, you must get over your fear." She said resting her tail on his shoulders. The ginger tom jumped to his paws.

"But I'm a coward! I'm too scared of getting hurt! I'm too scared to avenge my mother!" He shouted.

"You are acting as if she's dead Flamespark, and if you can't fight for your clan, become a medicine cat." she said over her shoulder as she stood up. Flamespark jumped in front of her.

"I have trained for many moons to be a warrior! I'm not becoming a medicine cat!" Flamespark growled in his defence. Lightningfrost shoved her face to his, they were only a whiskers length apart.

"Then stop acting like a medicine cat, too scared to fight a battle" she snarled. Lightningfrost bounded past Flamespark to catch up with her patrol. She could hear Flamespark close behind her. She tasted the air. Then she spotted Riverlight. The silver tabby looked at her and beckoned her over.

"Is everything okay?" Sunsky asked as the two warriors walked towards the patrol.

"Its nothing for you to worry about." Lightningfrost said. Sunsky twitched her whiskers. Deep breathes filled the forest.

"Lightningfrost," a worried voice said

"I found the fox." Flamespark said turning around to see a tall fox. A vixen to be exact. The vixens brown eyes burned with anger.

Lightningfrost turned to look at Riverlight who was clawing the ground, her blue eyes sparkling. Smokestorm had rage building up in his amber eyes as he gazed at the vixen. But the vixens gaze never left Lighntingfrost. Lightningfrost flicked her tail indicating for Thistlehawk and Greydawn to go around one side of the fox, whilst Riverlight and Flamespark went around the other. The vixens eyes moved from Thistlehawk to Riverlight. All sound in the forest seemed to freeze, the air cooled and the light dimmed. The forest its self seemed to have froze somehow, preparing for the battle ahead.

Thistlehawk and Riverlight then jumped on the fox, the vixen was unprepared for the attack. Thistlehawk clawed clumps of fur from the vixens tawny pelt, while Riverlight bit its ear. The fox whipped her head wildly side-to-side to shake them off but, the warriors clung on with their lifes. Lightningfrost hissed. The two warriors let go. While the vixen was trying to recover Flamespark jolted behind the fox and bit her tail. The vixen let out a howl of pain, Greydawn then sprinted underneath the fox and raked its fat belly.

Lightningfrost froze, the fox is expecting pups. But the fox got a hold of Greydawn by the scruff and threw him across the clearing. The grey tabby tom hit a tree and blacked out, the fox faced Flamespark who stood there like a trapped kit, but something changed in the toms eyes. Flamespark suddenly lunged for the fox's throat, but the fox jumped back and grabbed Flamesparks paw in it's jaws and flung him towards a rock.

The young ginger tabby tom hit the rock with such force that he didn't stir. Sunsky ran over to help him. Rage grew in Smokestorms eyes. The dark grey tom bit down hard on the foxes back leg. The vixen barked in pain but as she turned around Lightningfrost leapt for the vixens throat. She sank her teeth into its neck. The fox shook her head trying to get Lightningfrost off.

After a few moments Lightningfrost let go. The fox then bounded off but turned around to face Lightningfrost. Lightningfrost focused on the fox.

The sound of Sunsky hissing was next to her.

"You may have won today young fighting cat" the fox growled. Lightningfrost froze.

The fox can speak cat. But the fox didn't open her mouth.

"But we are coming to claim what was once the foxes" she growled. The fox then turned around and ran off. Lightningfrost

went to help Flamespark and Greydawn. How could she understand the fox?

"Lightningfrost! Help us!" A panicked voice said distracting her from her thoughts. She saw Riverlight by Flamesparks body. Thistlehawk walked up to her with Greydawn on his back.

"We need to get them back to camp, fast!" Thistlehawk said quickly. Smokestorm crouched down, Sunsky and Riverlight lifted Flamespark onto his litter-mates' shoulders.

The cats walked back to the camp in silence. Sunsky kept casting worried looks at Lightningfrost who was staring at the ground as she walked, frowning.

"Are you okay?" Sunsky asked looking at her, her yellow eyes wide. Lightningfrost noticed a few scratches on her pelt.

"I'm fine, just worried for Flamespark and Greydawn" she mumbled.

As they walked into camp, cats gasped when they spotted the patrol. Smokestorm and Thistlehawk rushed into the medicine cats den. Shadowmoon ran up to Sunsky asking if Thistlehawks okay. Lightningfrost just sat there, the vixens words still in her head, 'but we are coming to claim what was once the foxes'. She needed to speak with Nighthawk, and quickly.

Is it possible that she can talk fox as well?
