Chapter 8

Lightningfrost bounded through the forest. She ignored the thistles and thorns that snagged her pelt. The grass tried to stick to her pelt but she darted through it. Already she missed her clanmates, the territory and the gossip. She slowed down to catch her breath, she tasted the air. She was far away from the clans.

She took in her surroundings, she was in a birch tree forest. Bright pink leaves helped the sun light to fill the forest and the grass was short, soft and bouncy.

She was in no rush. It was sun high, she tasted the air once more. The faint scent of a badger lingered in the fresh breeze. The fresh scent of rabbit was strong. Lightningfrost dropped into a hunters crouch, her hunches coiled like a snake ready to make the killing pounce. She crept through the forest, sniffing the air regularly in order to find the tracks of the rabbit. Then she saw it, it was sitting there ripping grass from the earth with its long, yellow front teeth, unaware it was being stalked. Its brown back reflected the light of the burning sun, its plump body moved over to a fresher patch of grass.

Lightningfrost crept stealthily closer, keeping her body low and moving her paws lightly over the grass, just skimming the tops of the blades. She was now three fox lengths away and, her mouth was watering at the sight of the rabbit. Suddenly the rabbit bobbed its head up. It burst into a sudden sprint. Lightningfrost sprang after it, her powerful back legs gave her an advantage. The thrill of the chase powered through her body. The rabbit ran blindly through the forest, Lightningfrost was enjoying chasing her prey. She was now a mouse length away from it. Then she extended her paw, her long, black, curved claws unsheathed under the rabbit. The rabbit lost its footing and tumbled face first into the grass. Lightningfrost slowed down, the rabbit paralysed in shock twitched its back leg. She walked over to it and placed her paw onto its neck and unsheathed her claws letting the blood foam around her white paw, the rabbit started to violently shake. Lightningfrost grabbed its neck in her jaws and crushed its neck, she felt its bones break. Her eyes glittered as she carried her prey. Then she froze, she needed a nest. The scent of the badger still loomed around her. She looked up, a tall strong oak tree. She bounded up to it and heaved herself up the rough bark.

She fixed her claws in deeper as she scaled around the trunk of the tree, trying to find a branch strong enough to sleep on. She soon came to a sturdy branch and perched herself on it and started to eat the warm rabbit, after she thanked StarClan for it. The flesh was warm, and the sweet blood quenched her thirst.

Once she ate her fill she left the rabbit in a hole in the tree trunk and laid on the branch, she started to groom her white under belly.

The moon started to rise. She rested her head on her paws. She missed Smokestorms snoring and Flamespark fidgeting in his sleep. She sighed, is going to the mountain of secrets really worth it? She closed her eyes and drifted into a deep sleep.
