Chapter 36

"Mama my paws hurt!" Crow complained, the young kit was trailing behind the others. Lightningfrosts ears where flattened against her head, her teeth were grinding together. They had been walking for what seemed like moons. The kits had been complaining the whole way. Every little thing was starting to annoy her from the birds singing, the rustling of leaves in the wind,even the way the shadows fell. Hawksoul rested his tail lightly on her shoulder, his green eyes full of amusement.

"Keep your fur on, it's not much further" he said softly in her ear. Lightningfrost grunted and flicked her ear. Hawksoul slowed down to let Crow scramble on his back. She smirked as Hawksoul let out a small growl as Crow's thorn like claws dug into his back.

"What's that sound mama?" Jay asked. Rivers eyes lit up, her blue eyes glistened with excitement.

"It's the ocean" she said breath taken. Lightningfrost was confused by Rivers expression, the she-cat was hiding something. The group of cats stood there staring at the sea. The waves were slowly lapping the golden sand, gulls bobbed up at down. It all looked so peaceful. Lightningfrost parted her jaws to see if a patrol was close by. She picked up a scent.

"Pinknoses patrol is approaching" she stated turning to Hawksoul. The tabby toms green eyes were fixated on the mounds of sand in the distance.

"We shall wait here until they come" he said sitting down. The group of cats say there just outside of the border. River and her kits pelts bristled with fear and excitement. Lightningfrosts eyes narrowed as she noticed pelts moving swiftly towards them amongst the sand. She flicked Hawksouls pelt with her tail to let him know the patrol had found them. River needed the ground, her kits hid behind her.

Pinknose approached the small group of cats, Shellpaw, Peakpaw and Stoneheart. Hawksoul raised his chin and looked down at his mother who let out a growl. Suddenly Stoneheart lept at Hawksoul her claws unsheathed. He tumbled backwards with her pinning him down.

"Hawksoul!" Feather squeaked in fear, rushing to help the large tabby tom. Lightningfrost blocked in kit with her long furred, black tail.

"You need to learn how warriors fight" she said watching Hawksoul. Feather tentatively stepped back and watch the fight.

Hawksoul hissed and coiled up his muscles. He lunged forwards pinning him mother to the dank sand, his curved claws dug deep into her shoulders. She howled in pain. His emerald green eyes full of wrath.

"Stop this!" He hissed, her amber eyes glowed like fire.

"Never" she snarled. Before Stoneheart could try and dislodge his claws from her shoulders he removed one paw and brought a claw to her throat.

"Enough" he said calmly, he pressed his claw against her neck harder. She narrowed her eyes and went limp. He slowly got off her and turned to Pinknose who glared at him. Lightningfrosts eyes narrowed with satisfaction, she looked at Pinknose.

"I need to speak with Saltstar" she said. Pinknose lashes her tail.

"What do you want to speak to her about this time?" Pinknose scoffed. River looked to Lightningfrost, worried.

"That's our business" Lightningfrost answered. Pinknose looked to the rest of her patrol who all look hesitant.

"Fine"

The cats entered the camp. Nothing seemed to have changed; Dirtface and Vineheart sat outside the elders den, Sandfur and Swiftbreeze were discussing hunting patrols.

"Look who has returned" Pinknose snarled storming towards Sandfur. Cats turned to look at them. She made eye contact with Sandfur, the toms blue eyes glistened.

"Miss us already?" He chuckled walking towards them. Lightningfrost smiled at him.

"We came to talk with Saltstar" she said, Saltstar then walked out of her den. Her Amber eyes glared down at them.

"What do you want now?" She said. Lightningfrost looked to Hawksoul who nodded.

"We came back because we found the Mountain of secrets, we were told that we need to take some warriors from each clan to complete the balance and bring four clans back to the forest" Hawksoul explained. Saltstar let out a howl of laughter.

"So you came here to steal some of my warriors?" She said. Lightningfrost stood up.

"We're not stealing any warriors, it's their choice of they want to come. Surly you wouldn't go against StarClan?" Lightningfrost said. Saltstar let out a low growl. The fur on her neck and back started to bristle, her tail fluffed up.

"She's right Saltstar, you shouldn't anger StarClan" a sweet voice said, Lightningfrost turned to see Cherrytree standing there. She flashed Lightningfrost a smile.

"Fine! Any cats who wish to join Lightningfrost can stand by her now! If you join her you shall be banished! If you are found on OceanClan territory you will be killed for betraying your clan!" She shouted. Cherrytree bounded over and stood next to Lightningfrost

"Your going to need a medicine cat"she grinned. She was glad that her friend decided to join her. Grassblade then slowly walked over to the group of cats. He was hiding something, Lightningfrost could tell. River tensed up.

"You" River breathed. Her blue eyes widened as she looked at Grassblade. The tom hung his head, he shuffled his paws.

"I'm sorry River" he said looking at her. Lightningfrost then quickly realised that he was the father of her kits.

"I thought you were a rogue! I looked every sunrise for you in the place we first met!" Her voice strained with pain and the loss.

"I couldn't tell you I was a warrior, I was afraid you'd think of me differently," there was a moment of silence before he continued "I'm Grassblade, I was a warrior of OceanClan but now I wish to join Lightningfrost and protect her clan. I also want to set things right with you River, I love you" he said stepping closer to her. She buried her face in his shoulder.

"You have betrayed your clan Grassblade by mating with a loner. The punishment for this is death" Saltstar bellowed. He looked to Lightningfrost in fear but before she could say anything, Sandfur stepped forward.

"Leave them alone now, have you got enough cats Lightningfrost?" He asked turning to her. Lightningfrost looked to Cherrytree and Grassblade.

"Yes, thank you Sandfur" she dipped her head. Firesoul glared at her through the group of cats. Lightningfrost turned and left OceanClan once again, this time for good.

The cats stood on the outside of OceanClan territory. The cats turned to her.

"What now?" Grassblade asked her. She looked to the cats.

"We go back to the clans and gather warriors to join our clan" she said. The cats murmured and nodded.

"Mama is Grassblade our father?" Jay asked. River and Grassblade purred, their tails entwined.

"He is" she purred. The kits jumped on Grassblade. The small toms eyes lit up with joy. Hawksoul stood close to her, their fur brushed.

It was time to return.
