Sleep never really came to me easily

Sleep never really came to me easily. Often times I would lay for hours before a wink of sleep would find me. I sat up from my bed and slowly made my way out of the room, careful not to wake Petra.

Quietly walking down the halls, I found my way to the kitchen. Baking bread was a habit I have yet to break and it's become therapeutic for me, even in the most stressful of times. I quietly hummed to myself as I began to gather ingredients and tools I had brought with me to start. I looked around the stone room and found the oval cutout with metal doors, indicating an old oven. With some work I was able to breathe life into the cabinet as a fresh fire started to burn. I closed the metal doors to allow the oven to heat up.

The castle kitchen was quiet and I liked that. Not the usual hustle back at headquarters, hearing soldiers congregating to eat a meal before a day of training. It was peaceful... almost worth the trade for not being able to sleep.

After combining my grains and liquid, I kneaded the newly formed dough against the cool stone, still humming the same quiet tune.

"May I ask what you're doing awake at this hour?" A nonchalant voice broke the silence.

I gasped quielty, feeling a sudden surge of adrenaline as my heart jumped to my throat and snapped my head towards the door.

"Oh, C-captain Levi?"

"I asked you a question."

"Sorry, sir." I straightened myself, dusting off a bit of flour and turned to him, saluting, "I couldn't sleep, I figured I'd get a head start for tomorrow."

"At ease," he waved his hand, gesturing me to stop with the salute, hanging his head.

"Sorry, I'll clean up here." I said, beginning to pick up the tools I had neatly laying on the counter before me.

"I said 'at ease'. You can keep working, just clean up after you're done." He crossed his arms, kicking himself up off the doorframe. His demeanor was as if I interrupted him from doing something.

"Oh. Did you need something? I can make you some tea?" I offered. Even though we never had a bad experience with one another, I never wanted to get on his bad side. Levi had a stoic expression and steel eyes that could pierce through anyone.

"I couldn't say no to that," he replied.

I simply smiled and grabbed a kettle, filling it with water and tea leaves, and placing it over a flame to boil. I grabbed a teacup, placing it aside, and returned to my bread dough.

Levi calmly walked further into the kitchen, placing himself against a counter near me, his arms still crossed. I could feel him watching me as I worked, but I continued to hum to myself.

After several minutes, the kettle began to whistle to announce it was ready. I quickly wiped my hands with a rag and started to pour the tea into the cup, placing it near him on the counter.
