Three months later.
Lillian woke up from a tap on her shoulder and her teacher’s discussion about a Bio quiz coming up. She didn’t even realize that she had fallen asleep, she only closed her eyes for a few moments but she must have felt too relaxed and fell asleep.
She covered her mouth as she yawned and rubbed her eyes. She’s trying her best to stay awake but how could she when Zane kept her and Ryan up all night with his crying because he wasn’t feeling so well.
She forced herself to listen to Mr. Deck and take notes when all she could do was think about going home to sleep and take care of Zane. She missed him so much; she missed him every morning ever since school started again.
When class ended, Lillian couldn’t be anymore happier and she packed her stuff up but when she walked over to the door, Mr. Deck stopped her and called her over to his desk. Her eyebrows came together in confusion as she walked over to him, “Yes, Mr. Deck?”
“Lillian, I do understand that you had a baby and I can understand how dealing with school and a baby can be hard but I think you should spend a little more time studying. You’re failing,” he said and she felt so disappointed in herself. She hasn’t heard that since seventh grade and that was in art class. “I thought an A plus student would be able to do this without any trouble.”
“I’m sorry,” Lillian said. “I am trying Mr. Deck, I’m doing all the work and I have other classes to focus on.”
“I know Lillian but I’m just warning you. If you study this whole week on the last few tests we took, you can re-do them and they could raise your grade to a B possibly. Your report card wasn’t so great; I want you to get a B this time.”
Lillian was starting to hate hearing the word ‘study’ when she used to enjoy it, it made her upset. She did her best to smile though, “Thanks, Mr. Deck.”, she said before turning and left the room.
She went her into her next class and began to get prepared when Mrs. Lutz came around with the test they all took last week. Lillian frowned at herself when she saw she had a C minus. Most would be excited for that, but for a usual A and B plus student, it was very disappointing for her.

Lillian was rubbing her temple as Ryan drove them home and she sighed, “I don’t think I can do it,” she said to him.
He turned to look at her confused for a moment, “What do you mean?”
“I mean school and the baby. I have so much homework and I can’t rely on you and mom all the time to take care of Zane. Then I have to stay awake until he goes to bed and he wakes up three times at night crying. I’m tired everyday and we’ve been late three times already,” she said.
“So what are you saying?” He asked. “You want to drop out?”
“Of course not,” she said. “I can’t drop out of school, my parents will kill me. I just…I just have to take it one day at a time.”
“You look like death though, Lil,” he said. “You’re so much thinner and your face, it looks so thin. You have bags under your eyes and your hair, it’s kind of…how do I put this in a good way, dull.”
“You know Ryan, surprisingly, this isn’t making me feel better,” she said.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “Christmas break is coming soon in a week, try to get some more sleep during that time.”
Lillian lowered her head and nodded, knowing he was right. She wasn’t sure if she was getting depressed now or something but ever since school started, her mood has changed. She doesn’t smile a lot and she doesn’t talk much. She always feels cramped up in her own head and she loved Zane to death, but she’s always tired now!
When they got home and Lillian walked into the house, Zane was on the floor on his back, staring up at the TV where SpongeBob was playing. She put her bag on the couch and slumped down on it, her head falling back and rested her eyes.
A few moments later, she felt Zane grab her pants’ leg and she bent over, picking him up and laid him against her chest. At five months, he was a pretty smart boy, taking after his mommy so much. He just began crawling now and she’s so proud of him.
She kissed the top of his head and patted his butt since he seems to enjoy that and helps him fall asleep. She handed him to Ryan so they could spend some time together before he had to go to work and she got up to make him a bottle.
