YuXin sat still as a rock in the luxurious looking car, afraid to move even just a little. She fiddled with her fingers anxiously, fighting the urge to bite her nails, a habit she had whenever she's feeling nervous.
The person sitting beside her seemed to sense her nervousness and smiled at her warmly, "You can relax. Both sir and madam are really nice people."
YuXin nodded her head obediently but her back was still straight as a ruler.
"YuXin, you're here." a woman dressed in a white fitted dress and red heels bent down to YuXin's eye level and greeted her with a motherly smile, smoothing her hair gently. The woman had an air of elegance but her face bore a kind smile that made YuXin less intimidated.
YuXin stammered softly, "Y-yes, I'm YuXin. N-Nice to meet you madam." She looked at the woman with her doe eyes, shifting her gaze away shyly after she completed her words.
"It's okay, you don't have to be so formal with me. You can call me Auntie Xu. This will be your home from now on. Let me show you to your room."
The house was grand. Grand was an understatement in fact. YuXin took an in house elevator to the second floor to reach her room that was the bigger than her own room from before. The walls was painted in a light shade of turquoise, similar to the color of her previous room.
"I hope this makes you comfortable." Auntie Xu said as she patted YuXin's shoulder. Even though her face bore a smile, there was a tinge of sadness peeking through her eyes.
"If you need anything, let me know."
YuXin nodded her head before replying courteously, "Th-thank you Auntie Xu."
YuXin looked around the room curiously after auntie Xu left. The room had everything she needed including a wardrobe, queen size bed, study table and even a personal toilet. Even though it looked luxurious and comfortable, her heart still ached as she thought about her own home.
Clutching on to the key she wore around her neck, she muttered softly. "Mom, dad, I miss you."
"Er Erm!" the voice of a young boy came from outside her room and she swerved her head, surprised to see a young boy with tousled hair folding his arms and looking at her with his brows raised.
"You're YuXin?"
YuXin walked towards the boy, nodding her head slowly with her eyes looking at him nervously. The boy was dressed in a dark blue sweater and black pants, looking well put together for his age. Even though he was a head shorter than YuXin, the way he acted made it seem that he's older than YuXin.
"I'm Cai Xukun." The boy stared at YuXin, eyeing her from head to toe. "I heard you will be staying here from now on."
YuXin nodded again nervously, sensing the boy's displeasure as he looked at her with his eyes narrowing into slit.
"Just remember, my mom still loves me the most." he said angrily and stomped away to his room.
That night, YuXin clutched on to her key necklace as she tossed around in her bed, trying to sleep. The words of the Cai Xukun made her missed her own parents. Just the thought of them sent a wave of sorrow through her body and her eyes felt hot as tears slowly brimmed up.
YuXin, you promised them you won't cry, you are a big girl now. YuXin gnawed on her bottom lips, forcing herself to be strong as she blinked back her tears.
That year, YuXin was 8 years old when her live changed. The home that she once knew was now a distant memory and now she has to call this new place her home.
