She had been back at school for a few days now and Mia was already counting down the days until spring break. Currently, she was at lunch with Hazel and Nathan. Nathan was on his phone scrolling through Twitter while the girls were sharing a slice of pie Mia had brought from home. Her Dad had been stress baking before a big case and the apple pie was too good not to share with her best friends. "Are you sure you don't want to try it, Nikolai? It's super good," she urged.
"Alright fine," he surrendered. Mia took a generous helping with her fork and brought it up to his mouth. He grasped her hand and brought it closer to his mouth before swallowing the pie off the fork. Hazel watched with raised eyebrows, decided to stay quiet on how much they looked like a love-struck couple feeding each other. Mia smiled triumphantly when his expression changed to shock and delight. "That is delicious. When your Dad retires from being a lawyer he should become a baker."
"He will be pleased to hear you say that."
The smile was wiped from Nathan's face when Kyle walked up to their lunch table. "Hi Mia, Hazel. Hi Nathan," he greeted as he stood near Mia's seat.
Mia was silent for a second, her brain needed a few seconds to process the fact that her crush was talking to her. "Hey, Kyle!"
"Sup," Hazel said before taking another bite of apple pie.
"The English assignment Mrs. Furlong gave us looks super hard, right? Can't believe we only have a few days to complete it."
"Yeah, it's crazy," Mia laughed. "I'm sure you'll do fine though. You're super smart. I'm pretty sure you're Mrs. Furlong's favorite in class. I know you're mine." Her eyes widened at her last sentence, it came out of her mouth without a thought. Should she take it back?
Thankfully, Kyle only laughed, taking it as a joke. "Well, you're mine too. I gotta get back to my buddies, I don't want them stealing my food. See you later." He waved bye to the others, Hazel who gave him a wave back, and Nathan who gave him a curt nod.
The second he walked away, Mia dropped her head onto the table. "I am such an idiot! Why would I tell him he's my favorite? I might as well have told him I have a huge crush on him and think he's super cute!"
"And that you want to have his kids," Hazel supplied. Mia lifted her head off the table to glare at Hazel.
"Not helpful."
"It's the truth. You might as well just tell him how you feel or get over the crush. Those are your only two options."
Mia turned to face Nathan. "You're a guy, right?"
"Thanks for noticing," he said, his first words since Kyle had come to the table.
"You know what I mean. How do I know if a guy likes me? How do I know if I should risk making a complete fool of myself by asking him out?"
"You've already made a complete fool of yourself babe," Hazel smirked.
"I will not be giving you any more pie Lowe."
"Ok, ok. I'm sorry."
"Mia, guys like Kyle are obvious, they conceal nothing. If he likes you he'll smile at you and find subtle ways to touch you. If he likes you then he will most likely make lame excuses to talk to you, like English assignments. Just make sure Kyle is what you really want before you pursue him. Also, make sure he's not an asshole who has bad intentions. If he is, I'll hurt him for you," Nathan finished his advice with a threat.
"Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. Hazel, how did you finish all the pie?"
"It was good," she shrugged. "You live with the man, just ask him to make you more."
