The next few days of school passed by the way they normally did, slow and boring. However, Mia had learned of something interesting passing through town. It was lunch and Hazel was trying to convince Nathan to start also fixing for shady adults. Nathan was telling her he didn't want to die if he accidentally worked a job for a shady person who wasn't scared of tying up loose ends. Neither Mia nor Nathan had mentioned or even alluded to that night they had gone stargazing in the days they'd seen each other. It was as if they had mutually agreed not to talk about it without a single word being exchanged.
"Can I have Violet's number?" Mia quizzed before sipping her strawberry lemonade.
"Why?"
"I need it to text her, duh. I thought we were both the smart friend Hazey."
Hazel scrunched her face at Mia before reciting her girlfriend's number by memory. After saving it as a contact, Mia opened up her messages app and made a new group chat. Adding Hazel, Nathan, and Violet to it, Mia sent a text that read "Hi. I have gathered you here for a purpose. Please tell me you're free" with a screenshot of a traveling carnival coming to the nearby town. It would be a twenty-minute drive at most and the attractions looked fun. Hazel looked up from her phone.
"I'm down," she said before sending a thumbs-up emoji in the group chat. Nathan also sent a thumbs-up emoji. After a minute, Violet did the same.
"The use of words is just wonderful guys. I really know your true feelings," Mia sarcastically remarked.
"You understood, that's all that matters," Hazel replied. The bell rang, causing Hazel to let out a groan. "Can we ditch for the rest of class?"
"The teacher would notice our absence, Hazey. See you later Nathan." Mia waved bye to him before dragging Hazel back to their class where they would have to endure their teacher's wonderful lecture on World War Two. A topic he droned on about for way too long.
The group had decided Friday was the best day to attend the carnival, an hour after school. Mia had worn leggings and a hoodie to school but decided to change for the fair. Recently, she had purchased a new pair of jeans with stars, a planet, and a crescent moon painted on them. Pairing it with a yellow long-sleeved shirt, Mia secured her charm bracelet on her wrist. Unfortunately, her friendship bracelet had fallen off weeks ago, it was now tied onto her wallet. In the living room, she slipped on her yellow vans and waited for Hazel to be over. Nathan was going to pick the two of them up from Mia's house. Violet would meet them at the fair considering she had to first drop off her brother at sport's practice. The doorbell rang so Mia opened it with a smile.
"There's my future troublemaker," Hazel grinned with her arms spread wide as if she was waiting for a hug.
"Me? Why on Earth do you think I would become a troublemaker?" Mia hugged Hazel and pulled her inside, offering her a drink.
"I don't know. I feel like you'd have a rebellious streak and have a baby out of wedlock or get a regretful tattoo."
"To have a baby out of wedlock I'd have to be doing certain activities that I can assure you, I am not doing. A regretful tattoo is more likely. We could get matching ones."
Hazel thought about it for a second. "I'm down. We could get butterflies. Or a cheesy quote about sisters. I would not get the infinity symbol though."
"I don't hate butterflies," Mia offered. The doorbell rang so the two left the kitchen, making sure to grab their phones and wallets. "Hi, Nathan. What have you been up to since I saw you like an hour ago?"
"I had the pleasure of calming Ash down from a temper tantrum. I heard the carnival's been pretty packed the last few days, so let's go."
When they arrived, they waited for Violet in the parking lot so they wouldn't have to deal with finding each other in the commotion of the inside. They didn't have to wait long and Violet exited her car holding a small bouquet of flowers. After hugging Hazel, she handed them to her. "You look pretty," she praised. Hazel kissed her girlfriend and placed the flowers in Nathan's car.
