Chapter five

Ever since my two daughters have met, all Amber wants to talk about is how she and Katniss Page look alike. It's driving me crazy.

"Kat brought peanut butter and jam today too! See how alike we are, daddy?" She asked over the counter.

"Yes, baby, you're very alike," I said, smashing the potatoes we're eating for dinner.

"I finally have a best friend," Amber sighed as she walked around the counter and into the kitchen and lied on the floor.

"What are you doing?" I laughed.

"I'm finally complete," she said, still on the ground.

I laughed again. She makes me so happy.

"Daddy?" She asked, sitting up.

"Yes?"

"How come I don't have a mommy?"

I sighed and sat down next to her.

"Mommies don't fall from heaven," I said, "well, yours might have."

The blonde girl laughed. "What happened to her?"

"She left."

"Why? Did she not love me?"

"No baby, she loved you more than anything else in the world."

"So why'd she leave?"

"Because... she had to do what she always wanted to do."

"Which was?" Amber asked eagerly.

"Go to University in New York."

"Why didn't she bring me?"

"Because... she couldn't go to school and take care of you."

"I think she could've."

I laughed, "Probably."

"Why didn't you marry her so she'd stay?"

I wanted to cry. I should've married her, we could've raised our twins together in New York, been a happy couple, she'd go to NYU, I'd stay home with the babies. We'd run away. Away from our parents, away from our siblings. It was Piper that made us split up anyway, we could have fought it. Or run away from it.

But I didn't propose. And it was the worst mistake of my life.

"I- I couldn't." I said fighting the tears.

"Was there any other reason why she left?"

I thought hard. There had to be. There was.

"Because- because she didn't love me."
