(Set in the past of Mary's childhood)

—"WHY do you like this STUPID DRINK anyway?" Said Mary's father, his face red like a police siren.

—"Why can't you be a normal little girl and drink juice, or squash?!" Complained her mother while her father paced around the room, a giant in its small walls.

Mary wasn't a fan of big buildings and rooms. She much preferred her small, pastel brown bedroom and it's dim lighting and cozy feel rather than the enormous family living room with its white, plain walls.

—"Look, young lady, I am the authority here," stressed her father "and I am telling— no— ORDERING you to stay away from your grandmother!"

—"She is crazy!" Continued her mother "completely crazy! Living off coffee in her tiny cottage?! I will not have MY DAUGHTER fall prey to my crazy mother's thoughts."

—"You are grounded for a month! Two months if I see you drink that disgusting beverage ever again!" Said her father, before both parents left and slammed the door behind them.

Mary didn't hate them— Mary felt sorry for them. They just didn't understand coffee. But Mary knew someone who did, so she opened and climbed out her window— leaving a twig between the opening so it wouldn't close— and climbed out the apple tree next to it.

Mary knew what she was doing, in fact, she got grounded for drinking coffee basically every week. And basically every week her parents never bothered to check on her. They would frequently go on long travels with her sister, or shopping or sport matches or some other wearisome activity that Mary's own family was never concerned to invite her to. After all, she was always the odd one out of the family. Mary's oldest sister, Came (short for Camelia), loved tea, a "sophisticated, dignified drink" —to quote her mother. Came was always their favourite child, and since Mary's first word, "coffie" her parents were desperate for her to follow in her sister's footsteps.

But Mary didn't, and right now she was going to see the person her parents objected to the most— grandma Starbunks.
