Callie sits in the breakfast nook reading off instructions to me, "Don't forget to check on the cookies!" I open the oven, and an overwhelming heatwave hits me. The house is filled with the scent of red velvet sugar cookies. The globs of dough are starting to expand and solidify, but they are not quite done yet. I sit in the nook with my sister and continue playing our game of Go Fish. I'm currently winning, and continue to beat her as the cookies bake. It's funny how sore of a loser Cal is, but she gets over it quickly. We play a few more rounds of the card game until there a loud beep startles us.
I slide on a blue oven mitt over my right hand, and take the hot cookies out of the oven. They're perfect. I pick up a cookie with one of my spatulas and I watch the edges begin to slightly droop over the sides. The cookies are definitely going to be chewy, but that's the best way to eat them. Callie puts the cookies onto a cooling tray, but snatches two. She hands me one and she bites into the other. She moans with delightment over the cookie, making me laugh. Callie slowly finishes her cookie as I take a bite. I can't help but copy her reaction, they turned out better than I thought they would. The cream cheese flavor is strong, but not to the point where it is unbearable.
We sit across from each other in the nook, and hold onto the floral pillows in our laps which match the benches. The two of us laugh and joke around while our parents are out shopping. The sound of the front door stuns us but, then Mom and Dad come in. They walk around the staircase that leads upstairs and set the grocery bags on the floor.
Mom takes a deep breath, "Seems like the two of you made quite a mess while we were gone." Callie and I look at each other, I notice she still has some flour smudged on her cheek. She points to my chin, and after rubbing it I find that the crumbs from the cookie had stuck to my skin.
We let out a laugh, and Dad sighs. "You two are just all-around messes," he laughs at us.
