The yellow ball of fire had suddenly changed to hues of orange and then tangerine. It merged perfectly with the sky; like juice-mix dissolving in a glass of water. The clouds were cotton candy, as though they blushed at the warm touch of the sun. Silhouettes of crows flew across the sky which was now magenta. The mauve of the dusky sky had intensified, and in just a short while, the biggest star of them all would finally set, giving way to a thousand others.
"Oh my gosh! That was so much fun!" Hyerin exclaimed as all of you were on a walk back to your cabins after the day's activity. Today was the last day of the trip. All of you would be flying back to Korea tomorrow afternoon.
"I know right?!" Jungkook exclaimed excitedly. "I totally didn't expect Jin hyung to dodge my attack!"
"Y'all underestimate me too much." Jin rolled his eyes as Jungkook smiled sheepishly in return.
"I just can't wait to wash all this mud off of me." Jiwon remarked.
"Same here." Yoongi agreed with his girlfriend.
"Sheesh, who let this old couple join us?" Hoseok retorted, earning a smack on the back of his head from a particular grandpa.
You had been wrestling in the mud on the other side of the island. It was very fun. The mud just made the game a hundred times more interesting. Not so surprisingly, Jungkook won most of the matches.
Just that morning, Aera had revealed the news of her engagement. You felt bad for Jae but there was nothing you could do.
As you listened to the girls and boys chit chat, Areum nudged you.
"Unnie, what's the time? It looks a bit bright though we've been playing since the afternoon." Areum asked you. You held up a finger, asking her to wait as you checked your wristwatch. As you checked the time, you realised something.
Something very important was missing.
Your mother's ring was missing from your left middle finger.
"What's wrong, Y/N?" Naya asked as everyone had simultaneously turned around to see you frozen a foot behind them.
"M-My ring..." You looked up at your best friend with glossy eyes. "Naya, it's g-gone..."
"What?" Naya didn't waste a second before rushing to your side. "Shit, it must've slid off when you were wrestling me!"
"I... I'm going to look for it." You announced.
"It's going to be dark soon noona." Jungkook warned.
"I don't care, Jungkook. I can't afford to lose that ring." You said, clutching your hand to your chest as you bit your bottom lip to stop it from quivering.
"Okay okay, shh... Let's go find it. I'm coming with you." Naya said as she draped an arm across your shoulder. You nodded.
"You guys go back and notify Jae and Aera about the situation, I'll go with the girls." Jimin said as he jogged to catch up with you and Naya.
"Stay safe, Jimin-ah!" Jin yelled as Jimin showed a thumbs up.
As you reached the spot where you had been wrestling happily a few moments ago, you frantically began to dig around for the ring. You just couldn't lose it. It meant way too much to you.
It was the only thing that you had left of your mother.
Sure, she did abuse you but you knew she loved you. You knew she was a good person. You knew she didn't deserve what happened to her.
After an hour of searching, you had began choking on your tears.
"Y/N, it's been an hour and it's pitch dark. Let's go back now and come again tomorrow morning." Jimin said softly as he placed a hand on your shoulder.
