Dean

My dad didn't answer a text, which means he's asleep. If he's asleep, he's not monitoring my movements and I can sneak myself off home for my charger cord. My phone is low on power and I want to be available if Ari tries to text. She probably won't. She'll probably assume that I've lost both my phone and charger cord in her absence, but I like to keep the mystery alive in our relationship by losing surprisingly few personal possessions while we're apart.

I'm thinking about all this, walking down the street trying to figure out where I parked the car, when I feel something tighten around my ankle. Specifically a set of claws, reaching up through the earth. I reach down to free myself only for claws to tighten on my other ankle too. And I am being pulled down through the pavement.

Something grabs hold of my arm and I feel it tear clean off, joint pulling from socket. I grab the dismembered arm with my other hand and use it to beat back whatever is attacking me. But I'm losing blood. A lot of blood.
