"Good morning!" Matthew says, a little too cheerfully, as he and Caleb enter the room. "How'd you all sleep?"
Cara moans as she explains my nightmare incident. She shouldn't be complaining about how little sleep she got, I couldn't even get any. I still can't get the images out of my head.
"So," Caleb starts, "I was up late last night with Matthew looking at possible ways to get Tris' memory back."
"Well...anything?" Tobias impatiently questions. His hair is tousled and bumped up on one side-a bad case of bed head.
"We didn't come up with anything that can be a quick fix." Caleb explains. "But we did figure out a possible approach for her recovery. The brain is tremendous at adjusting over time when forced to and since her brain is trying to recover from being off of the Remembrance Serum for so long, she isn't going to remember anything for a while. But we're hoping that as time goes on, her mind will adapt and be able to recall everything."
"So you're just hoping that I will magically remember everything?" I exasperatedly ask. They obviously don't know what they're talking about.
"Well, there's no way they can be sure that over time you will remember." Cara tries to help their case. "But we need to wait and see first. If after a few months you haven't showed improvement, they'll try a different method."
"So, you are stable other than the fact that you can't recall anything." Matthew says, as if it isn't a big deal. "To help force your brain towards recovery, we will take all these wires out of you. I think it will help best if you try to involve yourself in activities throughout the day."
After they "unplug" me from the monitors, I crawl out of my bed, cringing when my bare feet hit the cold, granite ground. Now that I don't have to be stuck in this room, the only thing that is familiar to me, I don't know what to do. What will happen when I step outside? What will I see? Who will I meet? Why can't I remember anything still?
I'm awkwardly standing beside my bed, not knowing what to do, when Peter walks in.
"Hey! How's the drama queen doing?"
I smile as he approaches us. "Great! Except that part of my brain is still on strike."
"You really gotta figure that out," Peter jokingly replies. "So, what's the agenda for today? Wanna go get a bite to eat, babe?" He smirks at his comment.
I shift my eyes toward Tobias and then back to Peter. His nicknames for me are confusing. How do I know him? Tobias said that he loved me...but does Peter too?
"I was actually planning on being with her for the day." Caleb defensively speaks up. "Just her and I." He shoots a threatening glare at Tobias.
Oh no, does Caleb like me as well? I'm too embarrassed to ask.
"No, I need to be with her today." Tobias says.
"Look, you don't get to be with her every second of every-" Caleb starts before I cut him off.
"Hey! Here's an idea: how about I decide who I hang out with for today?" I shout, annoyed that they have been leaving me out of the decisions. I glance at each one of the boys individually. Caleb is still glaring at Tobias, who is looking at me. He places a protecting hand on my shoulder. When I look at Peter, he is sitting in one of the chairs with his feet propped up on the desk. I wouldn't mind being with all of them for the day, but it's obvious they Caleb and Tobias would not get along. I feel as though I should choose Tobias, because he's been so caring towards me this whole time. Even so, Peter is so lighthearted and doesn't make my memory loss a big deal. It would be nice to forget about that for a little while.
"Where did you want to get that bite to eat?" Peter's lips curls into a toothy smile as I ask the question. He pops out of the chair and walks over to the door to leave.
"I know just the place. It's not too far from here either." He smirks and waves to the others before following me out. "Well, boys, have fun today."
