Machines beep slow and steady, and wrappers rustle in the near distance. My first thought is my bones are crushing under tyres, but that can't be right if I'm in a hospital. So now I'm wondering, Is someone crunching on food?

"Do you want some, dear?" The soft voice of an elderly woman rings beside me.

"No, thank you." Mr Lorenzo.

"Poor girl," she tusks. "Is she your girlfriend?"

"No."

"Such a shame." She says sadly. "You two would make a daring couple."

"She's my student."

The woman grows quiet for a pensive minute before muttering. "Such a shame," once again.

I refuse to open my eyes after that comment.

"Will she be alright?" She asks again.

"Her legs need to be amputated."

My eyes snap open. "What!" I croak.

"Good morning." His words roll sarcastically.

A sharp pain ripples through my skull, and I thump my head back, groaning.

"Easy." He warns, standing up.

He's dressed in black slacks, and the top button of his white shirt remains undone. It's as if he was on his way to work.

The bright blue of his eyes is silvery, burnt out with exhaustion, and his hair a ruffled mess.

"Amputated?" My throat feels incredibly dry.

He leans down to whisper, eyes glinting with humour "I was seeing if you were awake."

Of course.

I exhale and look off to the side. An elderly woman with bright green eyes and a flock of grey hair is grinning at us, sporting a hospital gown.

"Water?"

Mr Lorenzo nods and heads out the room.

A second later, the door swings open again, and a different man joins us. "Miss Andrews." I'm immediately aware of the stethoscope wrapped around the shoulders of his crumpled blue shirt. He appears fit and healthy and his grey eyes sparkle as though he's about to give me good news. "I'm Dr Garret. Glad to see you're awake."

"I'm awake too, Dr Garret." The elderly woman grins, laugh lines forming at her lips.

He chuckles half heartedly. "Mrs Wendy. It's always good to see you up."

"Miss Wendy." She corrects him and I can't stop myself from laughing. I flinch, clutching my side.

Fuck this.

Mr Garret uses the next few minutes to go over the basics. A car hit me, but I wasn't directly in-front of the bonnet, therefore my left leg took most of the blow. I have a minor fracture which means a cast for two weeks and crutches for six. Yay to me. My rib is bruised badly too, but he assures me it will heal in no time.

I get he's trying to be optimistic that I got lucky with the few fractured bones, concussion, gashes and cuts. But I can't find it in myself to be happy.

When I sat by Ethan at the club and watched him drink away his sorrows, I said life was a joke and asked myself when it would end. It's only now when I feel regret. Something worse could have happened last night, and I can't help but feel accountable after uttering those demeaning words.
