Chapter 8

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!

GALES POV (by the way this is before and the phone call from the last chapter but in gales pov)

After I ran out of Katniss' house I went to the train station and hoped on the next train back to District 2. he take a seat at the back and close my eyes, just daydreaming. I got 1 or more till I'm back to District 2, so I guess I could think of a phone call I was going to make when I got back. I got it! I will get Travis to make the call so they won't notice it's me calling. Oh, ya Travis is a friend I made in District 2 and I have been living with him for a while because I can't afford a place of my own. I stop thinking about things and drift off to sleep.

A DAY LATER

I wake up and realized that the train stopped and I was flung out of my seat. I get up off the floor and walk off the train. I don't live to far from the train station, so it's not going to take me long to get back to the house. I walk for about 10 minutes and then climb up the steps to the door. I open the door and walk in. "Travis!" I call.

"in here Gale!" he calls back from what I think is the living room. I walk into the living room and find Travis on the couch with the newspaper. "nice work." He shows me the newspaper and I smile. the headline is'KATNISS CHEATS ON PEETA. IS THIS THE END FOR THEM.' and under it is a picture of me sitting on top of Katniss and it looks likes were making out.

"step one is complete. ready for step two?" I ask. Travis nods. "oh and by the way your going to be the one that phones, so that they don't know who is calling." i state. He nods again and we walk into the kitchen. Travis picks up the phone and dials. After a few seconds he says" hello, is Peeta there?" A few seconds pass then he says" hello Peeta, I would just like to inform you that your girlfriend, Katniss is cheating on you and if you don't believe me go and get your newspaper." He finishes by saying"good-bye Peeta." He hangs up the phone and turns to me. I grin and he grins back. Katniss will love me. I just have to wait till Peeta is gone.

KATNISS' POV

"Katniss you have to get up and tell me why Peeta left with a suitcase." Haymitch demands. After another few minutes I finally sit up and wipe the tears out of my eyes and look at him. "now tell me, what happened?" he asks. I sigh but start talking anyway.

"I woke up and Peeta wasn't with me, I went to ask you if you had seen him, you said no and told me to go hunting.." I couldn't finish because he interrupted me.

"I know that Katniss. just tell what happened today." I sigh again and continue.

"I woke up and Peeta wasn't beside me, I went into the kitchen and saw there was no note, so I thought that Peeta didn't come back and that i dreamt it. I fell to the floor crying, then someone opened and closed the door and sat beside me. I realized that it was Peeta and hugged him. We were talking when the phone rang. I answered it and someone asked for Peeta, so I handed him the phone. when he hung up he was mad. he went outside and came back in with the newspaper, I look at it and it said that I was cheating on Peeta. He said that he didn't trust me anymore, so he left me." I explain. I start crying again, so Haymitch puts his arm around me and gives my shoulder a little squeeze.

"he's going to come back. don't worry." he says.

"no he's not. the look on his face clearly said that he wasn't coming back." I sob.

"sweetheart, you have to have some hope." "and if he doesn't come back then I will make him come back whether he likes it or not." he says. I manage a little giggle, but just continue to cry. "come on Katniss it looks like it is about to rain. let's go inside." I sigh and he helps me up off the ground. We head to his house and when we get inside I plop down on the couch. "would you like anything." he asks on his way to the kitchen.

"a glass of water." i respond.

"ok." A minute later Haymitch comes out with a glass of water and liquor. "here." he hands me the glass of water and I take a sip.

"thanks." he nods. He sits in a chair next to the couch and turns on the TV and the news is on.

"Katniss Everdeen was spotted cheating on Peeta Mellark yesterday afternoon. This picture proves it. We are almost certain that the star-crossed lovers of District 12 are over. Peeta was seen leaving their house with a suitcase and Katniss on the ground crying for him to come back. Peeta was then seen getting on a train, heading for District 8. We will have more news on the tomorrow."

Haymitch shuts off the tv and turns to me " well that didn't help did it?"

"no, it didn't help at all. how did they get those pictures? no one was ever around us." I ask.

"they are sneaky Katniss. just don't do something that will make you more hated then you already are and you will be fine." he answers. I look at him confused. "earlier they put on the news they put people from different Districts on and they all said that they hated you." I nod.

"I'm going to go now. night Haymitch." I stand up and walk to the door.

"goodnight sweetheart." he calls. I leave and head back to the house. I open the door and lock and close the blinds so no one can get pictures of me. I walk up to our bedroom which I guess is now my bedroom and find one of Peeta's shirts on the floor. I pick it up and hold it close to me, I sniff it and it smells just like him. I take off my clothes and put his shirt on. It's big on me and goes to me knees. I pull back the covers on the bed, climbing into bed then pulling the covers back over myself. That night I cry myself to sleep thinking about Peeta

PEETA'S POV

I hop on to a train and head to District 8. Delly lives there now because she got a new job there. I phoned her and she said that I could stay with her as long as I needed. I now lay in my bed on the train, trying to fall asleep and hoping this day was just a dream.
