Chapter 25

"Katniss!"

"Katniss!"

I bolt up and notice I'm still in the hospital. But, I'm not in Peeta's room anymore. I'm in the waiting area. Peeta... Why did it have to be him? Why! I pull my knees up on the chair, hug them to my chest while I start to sob. I feel someone put their arm around my shoulder, giving me a hug. I look up and see Annie.

"hey." She says.

"hi" I sob.

"I heard what happened. I'm so sorry." She says. "I know what it feels like to lose a love one. When I thought Finnick died, cried and cried for days. It felt like I couldn't go on but, I did and now I.." I can hear the sadness in her voice as she is saying this.

"you don't have to go on." I choke out. Annie nods. "who told you?"

"Finnick. Finn told him and Prim told Finn." Even though I'm really upset right now i'm also really pissed off at Prim. I can't believe she is telling everyone what happened.

"Prim was the one who brought me here and showed me. She had said that this was good news. She put a scarf around my eyes even." I say. She gasps quietly.

"why would Prim do that?"

"I don't know but, I can't stay there tonight."

"how about you say with Finn, Finnick and me?" Annie asks.

"sure, i would like that." I respond.

"okay then, let's go. It's five o'clock and Finnick was almost done making dinner when I left a few minutes ago." I nod and she helps me stand up. As we walk to the door I have my head down, watching my feet take each step. We walk in silence, only the sound of the ocean can be heard. We keep walking till Annie says "were here.". Annie opens the door and when I walk in and hear laughing. I look back at Annie and see she's hanging her sweater up. She notices me standing awkwardly and gestures me to go up the stairs. I walk up and see Finnick and Finn sitting on the couch. Finnick must have heard me coming because he looks back at me.

"hey Katniss, hey Annie." Finnick says. Annie walks over and sits next to Finnick and I go sit in the chair in the corner. Finnicks looks at me. " Katniss I'm sorry." I just look down and pick at my nails. There is some silence and I can feel the tears coming back.

"Well...um is dinner ready?" Annie asks breaking the silence.

"Yeah, it is. Katniss would you like any?" Finnick asks me. I look up and shake my head. I haven't eaten anything for hours but I can't seem to feel hungry.

"Are you sure? Have you eaten anything today?" Annie asks.

"Um no, but I don't want anything." I say.

"How about just one bun?" Finn asks. My stomach growls and I give in.

"Fine just one." Finnick, Annie, Finn and I get up and go into the kitchen. Finnick takes the buns out of the oven and puts them on the counter. He picks one up and hands it to me.

"Do you want anything to put on it?" He asks.

"Um..do you have any cheese?" I ask. He nods and grabs some out of the fridge.

"Here you are." He hands me the cheese. I put as much cheese as I want and wait for it to melt. Once it has melted I take a bite. It's not as good as Peeta's but still good. I feel tears coming back, so I look at the ground. I can feel a tear sliding down my cheek and quickly wipe it away as I take another bite. I guess Annie seems to notice how I look because she asks,

"are you okay Katniss?" I look up at her hoping that I don't have anymore tears on my face. I nod.

"yeah, I'm fine. why?" She gives me a questioningly look and shakes her head.

"oh, nothing...nothing." She says and get's back to putting food on her plate. I move out of the kitchen and go to the back door. I look out the back door and see the beach. No ones out there and it looks quiet. I think I will go out there.

"um...I'm going to go out to the beach." I inform them.

"okay." Finnick replies. I unlock the door and open it. I step outside and close the door. I slip off my shoe's and keep them on the little porch thing. As I'm walking toward the start of the sand, the wind blows my hair back out of my face. The sound of the waves crashing up on the shore and the birds chirping here and there, make this calm. When I get to the sand I pick the perfect spot to sit. The sun is setting. Peeta's favourite colour.

"why? why did it have to be him? why couldn't it have been me?" I whisper to myself. More tears come out of my eyes. I lay down in the sand and close my eyes. I slowly drift off to sleep.

"Katniss."

"Katniss, wake up."

I open my eyes and see I'm back in the hospital. How did I get here? Last time I remember I was on the beach. I look around and see Prim, my Mum, Haymitch and...PEETA! HE IS LOOKING AT ME! BLINKING AND BREATHING!!! WHAT THE HELL! Wait....PEETA!! I jump out of the chair I was sitting in and hug him tight. I can feel him wrap his arms around me. I pull back and look into his eyes.

"how the hell are you alive!!??!" I ask. He gives me a questioningly look. I look at Prim, my Mum and Haymitch and they are giving me the same look.

"what are you talking about sweetheart?" Haymitch asks me. Now it's my turn to give all them a weird look.

"what are you talking about? I thought Peeta had a really REALLY bad flashback and died." I say.

"what?" Peeta asks. I sigh.

"you had a flashback and you died." I say.

"when was that?" Prim asks.

"yesterday."

"Katniss you have been asleep since yesterday. it was just a dream don't worry." Mum says. Maybe it was just a dream.

"I guess it was." I say.

"even if I did have a flashback it wouldn't be bad enough to kill me." Peeta says. I nod. He does have good control over them.

"when can he get checked out of here?" I ask pointing to Peeta.

"I'll go check." Mum says and leaves the room.

"so...when did you get back here Haymitch?" I ask.

"right after you feel asleep and started having your random dream. by the way was I in it?"

"nope!" I smile. He make grumbling noise, like he is so upset because he wasn't in the worst dream ever. Prim, Peeta and I all laugh at him. Mum comes back in looking at a paper.

"okay so, Peeta can leave......." She looks on the page. "right now actually." She smiles. After Peeta get unhooked from a few things and I sign some papers, we leave with Haymitch.

"bye Katniss come back soon!" Prim says and hugs me. I hug her back.

"I will. bye Prim." I hug and say bye to Mum too. We walk to Prim and Mum's house so that I can get the clothes I brought here. Once I get them we head to the train station to go back to District 12. All the way there Peeta holds my hand and doesn't let go once.
