"Now remember, anything goes as long as you stay in bounds. Everyone ready? Set. Go!" Yells Midnight, and I immediately start running.
The tunnel quickly becomes crowded, so I use my quirk on myself and float up above everyone. The second I exit the tunnel, I feel a shiver run down my spine. The temperature just dropped drastically, and I can make a solid bet on who did that. I look down to see Todoroki has frozen the ground, holding everyone in their places, as he skates across his ice to pass me. Besides myself, a few other of my classmates, such as Yaomomo and Bakugo also found a way out of the ice, and we all follow Todoroki closely.
Wanting to conserve my energy as much as possible, as this is a 4 km course after all, I land back on the ground, and keep up my second place position on foot.
All that early morning running better pay off. I think.
As I keep running, I feel a few people start to catch up, so I pick up my pace. I check to see how far Todoroki had gotten, and see he's come to a stop. In front of him stands about 20 1,2, and 3 pointer robots that I faced in the entrance exam. We both make quick work of the little ones with some ice and energy balls, before we are approached with 3 of the huge 0 pointers.
Now wouldn't be a half bad time to have Kirishima with me, as we took down these robots easily when we worked together. It doesn't matter though, as he's somewhere behind me, so I'll have to fight these on my own.
Before I can act upon the robots, all 3 of them are suddenly frozen by Todoroki, who makes a run through their legs. I follow up close behind, before he says something.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," he says, not looking back. "I froze them off balance, on purpose."
As if on cue, the robots start to fall, with me underneath. I can't turn back now, so I increase my speed to a sprint, and right before I'm about to be crushed, I hold the robot up with my telekinesis, just long enough for me to sneak away. I've never held something that heavy up before, so I'm lucky I only had to do it for a few seconds.
By now I've caught up to Todoroki as we approach the canyons.
"That was one hell of a risky move back there. You could've crushed me you know."
"I'm not too concerned about what happens to the others. I'm here to win," he says.
"Good," I say, as I pass him.
I gotta say, those morning runs have certainly come in handy. My stamina is at it's best, and I use it to pick up my pace even after passing him.
We come across the canyons, and now it's Todoroki's turn to pass me. He freezes the ropes, and glides across them with ease. I quickly pick myself up using my quirk once again, and fly myself over the ropes. We both clear the canyons at about the same time. I keep running, neck and neck with Todoroki.
"Later losers!" I hear from behind me.
I turn my head to see Bakugo using explosions to fly himself across the ropes, Midoriya surprisingly close behind him. What really catches my eye though, and gives me a bit of a laugh, is Iida gliding across the ropes with ease. His calf engines are propelling him forward, and his arms are perfectly straight out, almost like a tight-roper. By now, Bakugo has caught up to me and Todoroki, as we approach the minefield.
This is the last obstacle, I think. Better give it my all.
The three of us are neck in neck, until Bakugo blasts himself across the minefield, taking first place. Todoroki uses ice once again to run across the mines, and I follow closely behind, flying myself over.
The three of us land one after the other on the other side, and the finish line is in sight. This is what all the running was for. I pick up my pace, as the three of us make a bolt for the finish line.
Suddenly, I hear a huge explosion from behind me. I turn my head to see Midoriya riding a top of a piece of metal, most likely from the robots, and pink dust everywhere. Right before we pass the finish line, he beats us, coming in first place. I cross the line second by a hair, followed by Todoroki, and then Bakugo. All four of us could've easily had first place, as we were only a step behind each other.
I stop to catch my breath. Because of the adrenaline that flowed through me during the race, I didn't realize how tired I really was. I follow Midoriya, walking into the stadium to the cheering crowd.
"...And in second place, class 1-A's Kayla Y/L/N!" Present Mic yells.
The crowd roars, a few people chanting mine and Midoriya's name, as Todoroki and Bakugo follow. Even though they are a decent distance away, I can hear Bakugo yelling at Todoroki about something that happened in the race.
"Man, Kacchan's really worked up about something, huh?" Says Midoriya as he approaches me.
"Yeah. He's just salty he lost, even though he's guaranteed a spot in the next round," I respond with a shrug. "Hey, but congrats on first place. I don't know what little stunt you pulled at the end there but it was great!"
"Honestly, I'm not 100% sure either, but thank you!" He says scratching the back of his head.
"Did you and Todoroki have a disagreement or something? What happened between you guys earlier?" I ask.
"I'm not sure. But I could tell something was up. There's no reason I can think of for him to declare war like that. I mean, he even snapped at you, and you seem to be one of the only people he's decently close to."
"Yeah," I say, still trying to figure out what must've happened. "But anyway, let's go get lunch before the next event. I'm starved."
