Chapter 37

The next morning.
Kaiden made breakfast.

Whitney sauntered out of her room.
"mmm... something smells delicious."
"Good morning to you too. How was your night?"
"I slept better than I have in a long time. I guess I forgot how relaxing a feather-soft bed felt like." She let out a sad laugh.
"Kay... I wanted to ask a favour."
"Anything you want."
"I wanted to know if could get me an apartment at least till I find my feet."
"You want to move out when you barely moved in. Am I such a horrible roommate?"
"No, it's not you. I just-
"I understand. You don't feel comfortable living here and I get it... so guess what?
We'll go apartment hunting on Saturday. Cool with you?"
"That's perfectly fine with me."

"Anything else?"
"Actually yes... who was the lady you were with last night? I kinda felt bad we left her out in the cold."
"Jayla... Oh goodness! I forgot she was with me. She's going to hate me." He let on while looking for his phone.
"She's really pretty, you know. Is she your girlfriend?"
"Hopefully, yes if she ever forgives me for this."

Jayla drove over early that morning to the Airport in Jason's SUV. She'd lost her phone at Kaiden's and she wasn't ready mentally to see him yet so she resolved to go over to the airport early so she'd not miss Carrie and Chloe.

The girls spotted her at the Arrival terminal and loaded the SUV with their suitcases.
"You girls had lots of time to go shopping," Jayla said as she eyed the large suitcases.

On the drive back to the Edmonton Building, the girls caught up with each other.
"Why do you have a phone if you're not going to answer it?" Chloe questioned.
"I left it over at Kaiden's but I'll go get it back later. I'm sure the battery died."
"Oooh so you were with Kaiden all the time we were away and I thought you would miss us." Carrie went all mushy
"We saw pictures of you two at the Bliss. What? Are you two a thing now?" Chloe let out an almost interrogatory.
"I don't even know anymore, honestly."
"What do you mean you don't know?" Carrie quizzed.
"The love of his life is back."
"And what's that supposed to mean?"
"Whitney's back."
Chloe's jaw dropped.

Elijah was making breakfast for the girls in their apartment when the bell rang. He took off his apron and marched to the door. It was Kaiden and his face looked nothing like happy.
"Where's Jayla?"
"She's at the airport picking up the girls."

Just then the girls walked in.
Carrie and Chloe said hi and walked to their rooms not wanting to be involved in what was coming.
"What are you doing here?" Jayla asked as soon as she noticed Kaiden.
"Coming over was never a problem. What's changed?... Him?"
Elijah ignored the comment and began setting the table. Jayla did too. The last thing she wanted was to argue with Kaiden, especially in front of Elijah.
"Can we talk for a sec?" Kaiden requested
"I don't know..."
"Fine. Have it your way..... here's your phone, by the way." and with that, he left.
Her heart sank.

She walked to her room and stayed locked up all day.

*. *. *. *. *. My sophomore free year began with lots of assignments and research work. Just what she needed to take her mind off of Kaiden.

He left her thousands of messages apologizing and she was suppressing the urge to call him.
But she just couldn't take it any longer. She just didn't have it in her to be mad at him.

So she drove over to his apartment one Saturday morning.
She knocked a few times but there was no answer. She turned the doorknob and it was unlocked so she walked in.

She met Whitney sleepily rubbing her eyes and walking to get to the door in a morning coat.
"Oh. You already let yourself in. I'm sorry I took so long to get the door."
"Oh, my manners... you must be Jayla, nice to meet you. I'm Whitney."
She extended a hand and Jayla shook it gently.

She wasn't so impressed.
Why was Whitney living with him? How long have they lived together? Was anything going on between them? Where are they back together?

"I'm sorry... is Kaiden home?"
"Actually yes... he's still sleeping. We had a long night."
"Oh really?" Jayla asked appalled
"No- no... I didn't mean like that. I meant-

"You don't owe her an explanation." Kaiden's voice came through.
