Namjoon had been given a mobile phone on the first meeting with Teal, it was to be used so they could contact him and should be the only phone used for communication between them. It was reiterated that it wasn't to be used for personal calls t which Namjoon informed them that he was pretty much a loner so didn't have anyone to contact anyway but he understood and would follow their rules without question. He was surprised they had accepted him so well but according to the Starlings boss, he had been given a water tight recommendation and they were lucky to have him at a time when they desperately needed someone who was good at their job and professional at the same time.

The whole world of undercover was so secretive that Namjoon didn't even know who gave him that recommendation. He needed a name, he had thought long and hard about a name to go by, one that would cause him to turn around when someone called it. There had been a few failed missions over the years with newbie cops who hadn't responded to their 'name' and the mission had been thwarted. Namjoon settled on an old childhood nickname because it was distinctive and he would definitely respond to it. When he was growing up he was rather clumsy and messy, his parents would say he was 'really messy' and that followed him when he went to school and it was written in one of his reports one year. He wasn't sure at what point it happened but right up until university, people started calling him 'RM' and every now and again, his family still did... just for the fun of it.

He moved into a small flat nearer the clubs so that if he was followed he wouldn't lead them to his actual home. There were huge advantages to being an experienced cop when undertaking these missions because you were well aware of the pitfalls. He enjoyed being at the police building, on a quiet floor where most of his role entailed mentoring other cops, he was in charge but not in charge at the same time, which suited him. Going undercover was a completely different vibe and it gave him the opportunity to get out there and be someone else, whilst feeling like he was doing proper police work.

He had been spending all his time at Starlings so far, Teal had been introducing him to everyone and he had been sitting in on the meetings. Namjoon hadn't met Blue yet and the meetings he wasn't allowed to sit in on were the ones with all the clubs managers and Aqua. They'd told him that he wasn't needed in those ones yet and nothing of importance involving him would be discussed. Namjoon thought that the reason he wasn't a part of those meetings was because that's the time they discussed the things that he would only be privy to once he'd proven himself but until then he would take what he could get and work on showing that he was trustworthy.

He didn't mind the club, he understood how they worked and could see the 'extras' going on in the rooms backstage. From the description that Jungkook had given him, he didn't think he had seen Vante yet but he had definitely met the barmen he had mentioned. Namjoon warmed to Barney, he was chatty and Namjoon could see the way he altered his attitude depending on who it was he was dealing with. He would be fierce looking when standing on the door and dealing with a drunk client, straight faced and professional when talking to Teal and yet really soft when he was looking after the workers. Barney obviously had experience on his side and everyone responded to him.

After all the long nights that he wasn't necessarily used to, he was really looking forward to jumping in his car and getting out of the city to meet Jin at their hotel. Usually, after work he would go back to his small apartment, grab food on the way home or stick a ready meal in the microwave. His evening would be spent on the sofa, laughing at a slapstick comedy or reading a novel with the music channel on in the background. Jungkook told him that he needed slippers and a pipe, once, most people over the years had told him similar things, telling him he was old beyond his years but he was just a man of habit and liked his creature comforts. He had considered cancelling his time with JIn but took measures to ensure he couldn't be followed, he needed to see him and to have some kind of normality. He had driven to an unknown apartment complex and gone inside, walking straight through and out the fire exit, getting into a different car, so it looked like he was visiting someone if anyone had been watching him from the entrance. He also left the mobile phone that Teal had given him in his actual car, in case it was being tracked. He had the evening off as agreed with Teal so they shouldn't have been expecting him to be carrying his phone. The car they thought was his, wasn't actually his and all the paperwork was in his name, the police left nothing to chance. The second car was a hire car, in a completely different name too, but he was always looking around him, taking note of who is about, looking in the rear mirror of the car... if at any point he'd had any sense that he was being followed, he'd have cancelled Jin, there wasn't any way he would put his man in danger.
