The Sky mourns for the fallen.
Rain splattered against the open umbrella above us as we stood facing the field of no life, surrounding yet another hallowed hole, soon to be filled with the shell of someone that used to be.
There was quite a crowd gathered there. I counted around thirty people per space. And there were several people to be buried today, so the number of bystanders ranged up to a couple hundreds.
I looked from the crowds to my wife next to me. Her golden hair falling over her face, curtaining her from me as she kept her head low. A gesture I knew was intentional. Her hands lingered idly on her sides, her fingers fidgeting restlessly with the sides of her satin black dress.
I could feel her distance... More so than usual.
"Love..." I whispered, brushing a few strands of her hair behind her ear as I planted a kiss onto the top of her head. "...Why don't we go home..."
She didn't respond. Only raising her head slightly to look at the multitude of people in front, her hands coming to a stop and she wrapped her arms around herself, now digging her nails into her skin, until they fit comfortably on the newly made dents.
The celebration was short lived. A few words were spoken by the pastors before the people started to disperse, returning to their cars, in pairs or groups, comforting each other with their body language as they exchanged words of consolation.
I remained next to Sky, holding the umbrella above us, determined to stay with her until she decided to leave, however long that would be. But it wasn't until the graveyard was empty as it had been when we first arrived that she finally moved, taking a hesitant step forward.
Without even thinking about it, I followed, only for her to place her hand on my chest and shake her head. "No..." she whispered, glancing up at me, searching my face for my compliance before continuing, this time alone.
The rain soaked into her dress, making it cling onto her thin frame as she continued through the downpour, raindrops trailing down her exposed skin, filling in the dents on her arms. Usually, whenever I saw her like this, out in the rain. She was dancing, smiling, happy...
And now... She didn't even want me to be with her. I wasn't like her, or the others for that matter. I wasn't a god. But I guess that's why she loved me. I knew what she was going through... I understood grief. Like only a human could.
And for her not to want me by her side in this moment... Why did it hurt so much...
She continued down her path towards the newest addition of graves before coming to a sudden stop. Her body freezing momentarily before she collapsed onto her knees, her body curling into herself as she let out a pained scream.
I was about to run after her when she lifted her head up, facing the heavens, her fingers threading through her wet hair as she cried out, cursing at the sky.
Cursing at herself...
The sky joined her sorrow. A bright flash lighting up the dark clouds with multiple branches of light which were promptly followed by a thunderous roar that shook the very ground beneath me.
It wasn't just grief... it was so much more.
A heavy silence was left behind, so much quieter than before. Her sobs and the faint humming of rain were the only sounds I could hear, digging deep into my chest and dragging my heart out, leaving behind a lingering ache.
...I couldn't take it anymore.
Tossing the umbrella aside I ran after her, quickly throwing myself next to her and taking her into my arms, holding her close as I whispered sweet nothings, giving her the comfort she had sworn she didn't need.
Yet she didn't hesitate to cling onto me, sobbing into my chest as I held her, gently brushing my hand over her back.
I lifted my face up, the rain falling onto my skin; a familiar touch. One I knew all too well. Unlike Sky... I wasn't one to dance in the rain. I knew the sky for different reasons...
I know ...The Sky mourns for the fallen.

For this prompt we had to write a 1-sentence story (The Sky mourns for the fallen) and write a full story about that! :3 I'm actually really proud of how this turned out tbh
