Look Away

Who leaves the lonely night cold bed
I did not a time wisely make
The words, few catches, I guess I said
Too much for a clumsy mule to take
Lost where fools are easily lead
On stone my maudlin day did break
Openly cast my dithering head
I felt that old calamitous ache
It tasted bitterly warm and red
And vanished like a summer snowflake
I want my promised daily bread
Confetti at the vulgar wake
To oblivion do thee duly wed
If nothing then for mercy's sake
An hour lived is an hour dead
Drops thrown off a shimmering drake.
