Dae never stopped thinking of Ji's words. The fact she called her 'Mama,' and that Ji is worried about her own life. Dae swore to protect Ji. Dae promised that nothing would ever happen to her. And now that Ji thinks of Dae as her own mother, that responsibility is even heavier.
It was anxiety-inducing, to say the least. Dae decided against telling Jinyoung, knowing he would freak out just as much as she did since it was his sister.
During the assembly, Dae's hands were sweaty and shaky. She mentally begged on her hands and knees that Ji would rank up. She needed something good to happen in this awful period of her life. Her fathers were gone, without a single trace (other than the stupid "We're going on a mission," which gives no context). She needed Ji to survive. She needed Ji to live.
However, when JYP named all the students ranking from tier five to tier four, Ji Wang wasn't called; Dae's heartbeat quickened.
That's when she grabbed Jinyoung's hand and ran out of the auditorium. Jinyoung pleaded for Dae to stop and tell her what was going on, but Dae didn't stop. She ran all the way to Detention, dragging Jinyoung's resisting hand the whole time.
She knew all the students who didn't make it would be in Detention. A place she prayed Ji wouldn't be.
All the same, Ji was where Dae begged her not to be.
Detention.
Jinyoung's eyes widened and soon filled with tears. His sister... was set to die?
Shackled to the wall with the rest of the students who didn't make it, she cried silently. Hot tears spilling out of her eyes, down her face, and dripped onto the cold concrete floor below her.
"Please, please! She's only 12; she has so much growing to do. Please spare her!" Another voice begged.
Dae and Jinyoung looked to where the voice came from. It was Jackson. Ji's adopted daughter. The one who raised her from afar. The one who was meant to raise her until she could raise herself.
But instead, Ji was here, arranged to die. Her fate laid out for her before she could create it by herself.
"Ji failed almost all her exams. This is her destiny now." Momo responded. Dae noticed in her hand was a gun. It seemed to be fully loaded and ready for firing.
"No. No, no, no, no." Dae mumbled to herself, her voice getting progressively louder with each 'no.' "I, I promised her."
Momo and Jackson's heads whipped to see Dae and Jinyoung, both crying for their sweet Ji.
"You two. I need you to leave, even though you're teachers, you can't be in here during execution. Jackson here shouldn't be here either."
"I promised Ji, Sir. I promised she wouldn't die! So please, for the sake of that promise, don't kill her."
Momo rolled her eyes, wanting to get the execution process over with already. "As I told Jackson, Ji decided her fate, and you guys don't get to change it."
"She's so young, Sir. Please, don't kill my sister."
"I've killed younger," Momo said nonchalantly. "Now, all of you leave."
"Is there, is there anything we can do, anything at all, to keep her alive?" Jackson asked, his hands pressed together, begging.
The main assassinator sighed, rolling his eyes once more. "All I need is someone to fill her place."
"Someone to fill... You mean someone dying in place of her??"
He smiled, nodding his head. "Exactly. What a smart girl you are, Dae."
Jackson, Jinyoung, and Dae all looked at each other, the tense in the room high. All were willing to die for Ji; it was the silent decision to see who would actually fill her position, however.
"I'll do it," A recognizable English voice rang throughout the dungeons of Detention.
It was Noah.
"Noah? Didn't think you would be here. Shouldn't you be enjoying the assembly JYP worked so hard on making for students and teachers alike?"
"I saw Dae and Jinyoung run out of the assembly quite distressed, so I walked after them. I heard that Ji was getting assassinated, and you know the rest from there."
Momo nodded, understanding his point of view. Momo wanted to say no to Noah since this was her adopted child. But it wasn't her choice to make. It was his fate, and he chose to save the life of another. That was his destiny.
Momo sighed, her breath shaky. "I-I don't want to kill you, Noah. But I must. This is my fate. Killing my own son," A few tears rolled down Momo's face.
The older girl walked up to Ji, still chained to the wall. She wasn't crying anymore, just looking curiously and melancholically at everyone, including the situation.
Momo unchained Ji from the wall, and Ji ran up to Dae. "Mama!" She screamed, tears pouring out of her face once more. "Oh, Mama, I was so scared."
"Mama?" Jinyoung asked, looking at Jackson with confusion.
"Dae is the mother I never had. Just like Jackson is the father I never had. And you're the brother I've always had, but just as important."
Noah approached Ji and smiled gently. "Listen, Ji. I know you don't know me very well and vice versa. But I want to say goodbye and good luck to you. You're so young, and you still have so much potential. You need to work hard and fight harder. Don't let this ever happen again. Okay?" Ji nodded her head, taking in his words carefully. "Goodbye Ji, Dae, Jinyoung, Jackson. I'll see you on the other side."
When Momo started shackling Noah to the wall, that's when Jackson took Ji's hand and immediately lead her out of the Detention.
Gunshots were heard as soon as they slammed the Detention door closed. They heard many souls leave their body as they walked away from the door, but they had the one soul they sought to protect.
