The past

Teenage Kajsa cringed, watching adolescent Thor slam Loki on the ground in front of the entire class.

Not surprisingly, they were paired together for grading. Growing up with the god of mischief, it didn't take her long to realize the jealousy that Loki had over his brother.

It seemed everything was about Thor - all the time. People constantly compared the siblings. Thor was the cool, handsome, charming brother. Asgard's future king. All while Loki was just trouble - the other son.

No matter how much his parents loved him, the comparison bothered Loki a lot. And though he didn't complain outwardly, being his best friend, Kajsa got an earful of it. Not that she minded. She could listen to Loki talk for hours.

Knowing what it was like to be the odd one out, she cared deeply about how he felt and tried her best to make it better.

Like when they were younger, she could always put a smile on his face.

Tired of getting his butt kicked by a bigger, stronger Thor (their giggling peers didn't help), Loki did his favorite trick of all. He let Thor attack a false apparition of him so that he could attack from behind.

As always, it worked, though it annoyed Thor immensely.

The teacher was displeased, but Kajsa found his mischievous behavior rather amusing.

Satisfied, Loki walked past a grumbling Thor to sit down with the rest of the students. A sweating mess, he winked at Kajsa, who blushed.

The butterflies she'd tried so hard to ignore fluttered relentlessly in her stomach. She didn't know if it was puberty or what, but Loki's smiles and antics were becoming a bit irresistible as of late.

"Please do not tell me you have a crush on Loki," Sif's voice brought her gaze away from the god of mischief.

Kajsa looked at the brunette; Sif wore a look of disgust.

"Maybe," Kajsa shrugged, though she was curious of Sif's thoughts. "What's so wrong with that?"

"What's wrong with that?" Sif scoffed. "It's Loki . . ."

Kajsa's eyebrows were almost off her forehead. She didn't understand what her friend was implying.

"I mean, he's the son of a king, I'll give you that. But he's arrogant, a-know-it-all, a bit cynical and well . . . mischievous."

Kajsa thought for a moment. Sif was surprised that she hadn't gotten defensive or was even upset. Then again, it took a lot to get a soft-tempered Kajsa out of character.

"He can be all of those things," she didn't deny, "but if you get to know him, you find that he's quite sweet. His trickster ways can be quite pleasant, and his cynicism . . . "

Kajsa looked over at Loki again. He was sitting alone while others doted on Thor just as adults did whenever they encountered the golden-haired boy that would one day be the king of Asgard.

Imagine being so young, having to know and find content in the reality that your father didn't consider you to take the throne.

All you could do was watch people fawn over your brother and boast about the king he'd be in the future.

To have people compare you to your brother and only respect you because your father was king. Not because they cared about who you were as a person or even attempted to figure out why you behave the way you do.

Loki wasn't cynical. He was a boy looking to be understood, accepted, and seen as destined to lead a people one day - destined to do and be anything extraordinary.
