ZENIYAH

"Nurse Samuels!"

"Nurse Samuels!!"

I snap out of my trance looking up at my coworker.

"Sorry, Yes?" I asked.

"Can you take that patient? I need to take my lunch break" she says handing me the patient's folder.

"Yes, yes of course," I said grabbing it. I quickly head down the hall to the waiting area to get the patient. I work in a small pediatric hospital, because kids are the only kinds of humans who don't give me panic attacks, freak me out, or make me want to commit murder. Well, most of the time.

Turning into the patient's area I look at the folder for the patient's name.

"Russo!" I called out. No one looked up, there were 2 moms with their kids and one baby in a chair strangely separated from the other patients. I approached the car seat and saw a baby that appeared to be sleeping but was red. I rested my hand on the forehead and found he had an extremely high fever.

"Who's baby is this?" I asked panicked as the baby seemed very sick. No one answered which confused me further. I unbuckled the baby from the car seat as it looked too heavy to carry, and slowly lifted the baby out. I head towards one of the rooms to start running some tests. Since I'm not sure who the baby is there are only so many tests I can run, just in case of allergies. Frustrated that there's not much I can do to check why he has a fever, I head back out so I can ask the head doctor what to do in this situation.

When I reach the front desk I'm met with a man yelling loudly

"WHERE'S THE CHILD. HE WAS SITTING RIGHT THERE IN THE CAR SEAT AND NOW IT'S FUCKING EMPTY. DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM I'LL RUIN YOUR LIFE IF YOU DONT TELL ME WHO TOOK HIM" He yells, while Amelia who's the receptionist looks terrified as tears well up in her eyes. This quickly ticks me off, I've never been the loud rowdy type but Amelia is one of the sweetest girls I've ever met in my life.

"Excuse me sir who the hell do you think you are!" I said quickly grabbing his attention.

"BITCH LISTE-" He begins saying. Now I'm ready for war because I'll never sit there and let a man or anyone for that matter call me a bitch.

"You're the imbecile who left your child sitting out here I've been looking for the guardian. Your child is sick and he's with me goddammit" I yelled, frustrated before stomping away.

I storm back into the room to find the boy now crying. I quickly grab him and start patting his back to calm him down. I start tearing up, I hate seeing such innocent creatures in pain. When he starts to calm down and his tears are reduced to hiccups I place him down and turn to grab the doctor and gasp.

The man from the front desk stood right by the door. I finally got a good look at him and he was very handsome. Sucks he was so disrespectful. Rolling my eyes I approach him a bit before asking.

"Sir, do you know why he's so sick? How old is he?  Do you know if he has any allergies? Is his file at this hospital whats his last name so I can search it up?" I ask all in one breath. After an unnecessarily long pause, he finally answers.

"No, I think like 1, I don't know, and his name is Alessandro Mariana Russo Junior" His voice is beautiful, in the earth-shaking kind of way, on top of it all he has a British accent.

"So you mean to tell me all you know about your son is his name?" I ask judgingly with an attitude while sizing him. Before he can answer I head back to the front to grab the Russo file where I left it.

Returning to the room while reading the file I learn he has no known allergies and he's about 8 months, I sigh in relief knowing his fever may just be caused by late teething. I head back into the room to find the man on his phone. I look in the folder and find the only listed guardian is "Alessandro Russo Sr"

"Sir are you, Alessandro Russo,?" asked causing him to look up from his phone.

"Yes, I am," He says briefly before looking down at his phone.

"Sir, your son is missing a couple of vaccinations, and he has a high fever," I said rubbing the back of baby Alessandro's hand as he holds my finger, with his chubby hand.

"SHIT. Is he going to be ok? Does he need a procedure done or something?" He snaps causing his son to whimper then quickly begins to sound worried. I giggle now realizing he's very clueless when it comes to kids

"No sir, he's teething hence the fever and fussiness he'll survive. Though, he does need those shots" I quickly grab the needles and all my other supplies.

20 minutes later everything is done and I put him back to sleep and look back up to find Alessandro Sr looking at me.

"How do you do it?" He asks

"Do what?" I ask

"He's so calm in your arms, the only reason I left him earlier is I had to take a call and I couldn't get him to be quiet," He says looking tired. I shake my head

"That isn't an excuse, your son should be your first priority, I know you care about him based on how angry you were when you came in but you shouldn't leave him like that," I said as calmly as possible, I had a lot of experience with new parents and they weren't so keen to judgment.

"I get it, It's hard though. I'm really sorry for the way I acted earlier" he apologizes. I sigh, realizing he meant no harm.

"It's fine hun, I get it, it's hard. If you don't mind me asking. Where's his mom?" I ask curiously. His face flashes pain before changing to one of anger. He looks away, and I nod understanding it's a sensitive topic.

"Listen if you want him to be healthy you gotta step up ok," I said looking at him seriously, he nods understanding.

" I don't usually do house calls but would it help if I came by from time to time until he gets better, his fever should be down by tomorrow afternoon, here's my cell number if anything give me a call," I said writing my number down.

"Thank you, so much. I've been trying to build a relationship with him you know, it's just been hard," he says rubbing the back of his neck.

"I get it," I said helping Alessandro Jr back into his car seat.

I look at the time seeing it's time for me to head home. I clean the area and head out.

Once I said all my goodbyes and headed out to my car, I rested my head against the steering wheel to take a breath then pull out of the parking lot and head home.
