Eileen-Partners in more ways than one

"You know if you wanted to see me that badly, you didn't have to go and get yourself almost killed."

A breathy laugh escaped my lips as I took the outstretched hand, letting my best friend/on and off hunting partner help me up.

"Well it worked didn't it?" I joked, offering an innocent smile.

Eileen rolled her eyes, but quickly followed that with a body scan, searching me for any wounds.

"I'm serious Y/N. You know better than to go after a banshee without me. You've only hunted one other before," she pointed out and met my eyes again. Her gaze held disapproval, but I could clearly see the concern behind it.

I softened and moved my hands to sign as I spoke, a habit I had picked up on after being friends with her for so long.

"I'm sorry I worried you. I wanted to call, but I thought you were still in Columbus following that lead,"

Eileen had been hunting banshees since she was a kid looking for the one that killed her parents and took her hearing. She'd found what looked like it could have been the same one, but since she was here, maybe it wasn't.

"Dead end." She said simply. "You're lucky I was passing through town, and saw your car parked at the motel I checked in at. I found the right people, asked the right questions and figured you might need a hand. You really had me worried when I put the pieces together. Would it have killed you to answer my texts?"

As she spoke she signed as well, gestures as frenzied and worried as her tone of voice had become. I swore it looked like tears had gathered in her big brown eyes which felt like a punch to the gut. She really must have been freaking out. I couldn't fault her for it considering her past. She didn't want to lose me the same way she lost her parents.

A frown found it's way to my face and I pulled her into my arms before responding. She exhaled shakily a small whimper escaping as she hugged back, sinking into my embrace. We remained that way for a moment before I pulled back to speak.

"Thank you. And I'm sorry. My phone's been getting fixed for the past couple days so I haven't been able to see anything...and you're right. It was a dumb thing to do. To be fair, I actually wasn't even looking for the damn thing tonight," I justified. "I took a break from chasing it, frustrated that I couldn't track it down after I lost it yesterday. Was headed to the bar when I...Well I stumbled upon it here," I gestured to the alley I'd found the creature in.

The banshee was injured and tending to it's wounds when I found it. I'd encountered it the day before and got in a lucky hit, saving the girl who would have otherwise died, but I'd lost it after that. I had thought it would go after the girl again, but it didn't, and that threw me off.

Eileen considered this but nodded a bit. "Well come on, you can ride back with me," she said and lead me to her car.

Once we arrived back at the motel, the guilty feeling inside me hadn't subdued and I decided I was going to try to make it up to her. I placed my hand on her arm gently to gain her attention.

"I really am sorry. I never wanted to scare you,"

Eileen nodded and produced a half smile for me. "I know. I don't mean to doubt your abilities as a hunter either. It's just my own worries,"

I hesitated briefly. "Do you...Want to grab a drink? I think we could both use one,"

Eileen chuckled and ran a hand through her hair, nodding in confirmation. "I think you may be right,"

That's how the two of us found ourselves twenty minutes later at the very bar I had been going to before this whole fiasco started. I still felt tremendously awful for causing Eileen so much panic on my behalf. The universe just wanted me to inadvertently make her suffer it seemed. If only my stupid phone hadn't broken halfway into this case then I could have at least told her I wasn't lying in a ditch somewhere.

A hand was placed on my wrist. "You're thinking so loudly even I can hear it," Eileen joked softly and I gave out an undignified snort.

"Sorry. I just feel bad for all this," I replied.

"Don't. I'm just happy you're okay and that I get to see you," she smiled and squeezed my wrist for good measure.

At the simple gesture I felt my stomach give a flutter. Yet another thing the universe had plagued me with. Feelings for my best friend which would never be reciprocated. That thought alone made me down the rest of my drink and flag down the bar tender for another.

"Aside from everything tonight how have you been? It's been a few weeks since we last saw each other," Eileen continued after I didn't reply.

To anyone else a few weeks might not seem like too long (Three weeks and a day to be exact). However we were close, not only as friends, but also in proximity. We hunted in the same general area, and teamed up more often than not. I often found myself wondering why we didn't just hunt together full time, but then I reminded myself it would be harder to keep my feelings hidden if that were the case.

"I've been okay," I said, hands moving to sign along with my words. "Visited my sister for a bit, that was nice."

Eileen smiled. She knew my sister and I were close. She'd gotten out of the hunting life though and had settled down with a wife and kids. I was happy for her, and her family was beautiful. I was lucky to have all of them.

"How about you? Been alright?" I asked her after a moment. Eileen, to my surprise hesitated to answer.

"Sort of," She seemed to admit reluctantly.

I frowned and turned in my seat at the bar to face her more. "Sort of? What does that mean? Is there any way I can help?"

The bartender came back with refills for both of us and I thanked her silently before turning my full attention back to Eileen. She took a sip of her drink before considering my questions.

"I was hoping to talk to you about something."

I raised my brows. "Eileen, are you breaking up with me?" I joked, and held a hand to my heart for extra dramatics.

Eileen laughed and pushed my arm playfully with a shake of her head. "Stop it, I could never!" She countered. I found myself smiling at her, glad that I'd successfully managed to make her laugh.

"Well in that case, what's up?"

Eileen collected herself and pursed her lips. "I think I-" she stopped and restarted. "How do I-" she stopped again. "You joked about me breaking up with you but it's...Sort of the opposite that I want to talk about. You are my best friend but I feel more for you and I...I want to be with you, hunt with you and never let you go. You mean the absolute world to me Y/N. I always knew that but with the scare you gave me tonight I...I can't hide it any more. I love you,"

My brain lost all fucking function and the only thing I could hear was the pounding of my heart and rushing of blood through my veins. I could barely believe it, but here she was. The woman of my dreams wanted me too.

A huge grin crossed my face before I could stop it. "I love you too you idiot," I signed, and reached out, cupping her cheek in my hand.

Eileen's nervousness evaporated and she leaned into my touch, mirroring my expression of pure bliss. "I'm going to kiss you now because I can't wait any longer," she announced, and that was all it took for everything to fall into place.
