I ran through the village, pulling my hood further over my face, and sticking to the shadows. My heart was beating rapidly. This was always the difficult part. Hopefully it wouldn't have to be this way for too long. I rid myself of the thoughts clouding my head and tip toed to the small house that was my destination. I smiled to myself and scuttled to the door, knocking three times fast, three times slow then twice fast and again twice slow.
The door was opened within moments after I finished the sequence and I was pulled inside, the door quickly shut beside me. I felt my back pressed against the wooden door, and soft lips press desperately against my own. My own arms worked their way around my secret lover and pulled until her body was pressed up against mine.
Her long fingers curled into my hair and threaded themselves between the strands like straw weaved into a basket. The moment ended all too soon, and yet I was still left breathless. My eyes, which had closed at the initial passion were now open and I was met with the most beautiful snow white skin and radiant red hair. The smile spread wide across her face had me smiling back within an instant.
"Rowena," I whispered her name, and brought my hand to cup her cheek. Her smile widened, if possible and the young woman I had fallen in love with leaned into my touch. "I missed you," She spoke, her voice like the touch of an angel. I leaned forward pressing our foreheads together. "It has only been one night since I've seen you," I teased softly.
Rowena giggled. "Well I still missed you," she smiled. "Now come on. Have you packed?" She asked, and I nodded, picking up the sack I had carried with me, but dropped upon receiving my greeting. Rowena smiled. "Good. Now come on, the horses are waiting for us," I took a breath. "Are you sure you want to do this with me? You'd be leaving everything...Your life...Your father...If he finds out you've fun away with me he may hurt you," I said, frowning at the thought alone.
Rowena took my hand and cupped my chin gently moving my head to meet her eyes. "I love you Y/N. And I don't care that it's wrong. I don't care if the devil takes my soul for loving another woman. I don't care what my father or anyone thinks. I want to be with you, and if we have to run away to be together, then so be it," She said softly, her deep blue eyes showing all sorts of emotions, but I could see she truly meant it.
I flung my arms around her and hugged her close. "I love you too. With all of my heart," I breathed. She held me close for a moment, before we separated and she went to gather her things. "My father is out. I'm sure he will be too drunk to notice we are gone when he returns. Come on," She grabbed my hand, and the two of us hurried out to the horses.
The night was cool, but not cold. I felt the breeze against my face, and new it would be warmer by sunrise. I turned to my horse and stroked her muzzle. "Good girl," I spoke softly, and saddled her up, seeing Rowena had done the same. I tied my sack to the saddle and mounted, taking the reins. "Follow me closely," Rowena whispered to me before she clicked her tongue and her horse began to trot. I followed as we headed towards the edge of the village and to the forest.
I glanced around the slumbering town with a sense of foreboding. "Rowena wait..." I whispered. She stopped. "What is it Y/N?" She asked, turning to look at me her eyes full of concern. "Somethings not right..." Rowena lead her horse back to where I was. "What do you mean?" She asked, her eyes darting about in worry.
"It's too quiet..." I muttered. Rowena looked at me and sighed softly, a small smile on her lips. "You and your worrying my dear. Come. The sooner we're out of here the better," She leaned over and pressed a chaste kiss to my lips. As soon as our lips connected, a voice broke the silence, our worst fears turning to reality.
"It's true I tell you! See it with your own eyes now men!" Rowena's father stormed into view along with the town priest and several more of the church's followers. "Y/N has bewitched my Rowena to love her! Convinced my daughter with sorcery!" He continued, the wrinkles on his face illuminated by the torches on the towns edge.
My heart was hammering against my chest and the claws of a fear I had never felt closed around my heart in a death grip. I looked desperately at Rowena who's eyes were wide, terror written across her delicate features. "No! Father that is not-" She began to protest desperately, but I knew that if she said anything else, the clergy men may be convinced she too was a witch.
"It's true!" I interrupted, tears in my eyes. "Rowena is innocent...I-I've used magic to corrupt her...After all...Only witchcraft can make two women fall in love," I choked out, a tear running down my cheek. I knew what was was to come, and I did not want the same doom for my Rowena. Not now, not ever."No!!" Rowena yelled, and my eyes deceived me as they stole a glance at the woman I had come to love more than I ever knew I could love. The horribly anguished expression on her face was enough to make me nauseous, for she too, knew of my fate. "There you have it. She has confessed to using witchcraft!" The priest spoke. "She must be hanged for her sins!"
Rowena let out a cry of protest, as I simply dismounted my horse, silent tears falling from my eyes. The tears were not for myself, but for the pain that Rowena would feel after I was gone. "Father please! You can't do this! Stop! I love her! I love her please!!" Rowena sobbed, her small frame shaking as her cries took over.
"Hush my child, you'll be free of this spell as soon as the witch dies," Her father attempted to console her, but Rowena screamed at him and shoved him away, running back to my side and flinging herself onto me. I stumbled slightly but wrapped my own arms tight around her, savoring the feeling one final time. "Don't forget me," I whispered.
Her screams of protest would forever haunt my soul as I stood at the gallows the following morning, and stared one last time upon her face. "Y/N Y/L/N. You have been found guilty of using witchcraft to make a woman fall in love with you. How do you plead?"
"Guilty. For I am guilty of loving you,"
"May god save your soul,"
"Y/N!"
A lever was pulled, a thwak and a crack where heard, and the screams of a heart broken lover echoed through all of Scotland.
