I stood behind Jacob, the wind from the beach forcing my eyes to squint. He leaned against his motorcycle as I looked over his shoulder at the pack hanging out on the sand. My nerves intensified and my chest felt as though it were crushing my lungs.
"I don't understand why you're so nervous," he said followed by a stifled laugh.
"I'm not," I quickly protested and looked away from the group of werewolves hanging out. It was clear I felt uneasy just from my facial expression, no matter how much I denied it.
"Then what are we waiting for again?" He asked and gave me a taunting stare. I looked up at him, my face going from anxious to annoyed in a matter of seconds.
I grumbled, "Alright let's go."
Walking down the beach, sand deflected off of my large black boots. Jacob placed his hand around my shoulder and casually walked over to the group of werewolves. He gave them all a friendly waves as some yelled "hey!" While others yelled "Jacob!"
Sam noticed me instantly and gave me one of his regular sharp glares. I instantly felt twice as small as he walked up to us, his eyes never leaving me. I looked up at Jacob to expect a warm smile but he too looked uneasy. It was an odd and unfamiliar sight on him. The only other time he made that face was when he told Charlie that he kissed Bella. His eyebrows furrowed and his mouth turned downwards slightly.
"What's going on?" I asked.
Jacob looked down at me and quickly evaded his eyes. Something was definitely wrong. Jacob never broke eye contact first. He opened his mouth to speak but Sam interrupted.
"Dawn," he said and crossed his muscular, veiny arms. "I'm glad you came," he said. The way he stared at me made me a little uneasy. I laughed nervously.
"Yeah well, I'd take any opportunity to hang out with more of my kind," she said in an almost forced and reanacted tone. Following my words was an awkward silence. Jacob cleared his throat and walked me over to the group. I might've talked to him before but I couldn't manage to utter a word now.
Paul was the first person to make eye contact with me and smile invitingly. He was sitting with his arms crossed. Carlisle used to tell me that crossing arms was a sign of discomfort. I tried not to look too into it as we approached the group but it kept poking at the back of my mind.
"It's the vampire werewolf," Jared announced and everyone's eyes fell on me all at once. He snickered evilly as he saw me shrink from the attention.
"Thanks for announcing my presence Jared," she said sarcastically and rolled her eyes. Jacob patted my back as he snickered. He sat down first and I followed seconds after. It was almost as though a blanket of silence was placed over the group. Compared to the bustling and social sight I saw from the motorcycle, this was much different. Did they not want me here? The thought crept up my spine like a shiver travelling along my skin. I pushed away the urge to shutter and ended up crossing my own arms in discomfort.
I turned to Jacob and he looked at the sand with a guilty expression. Now I was certain something was wrong.
"Jacob," she mumbled. It was so quiet that the mumbles of her and the others seemed way too loud. "Somethings wrong," she added while rubbing her arms comfortingly. Sam walked back to the group with a stone cold expression and as if it couldn't get any worse, the silence grew louder. Jacob didn't reply to me, he just continued to look down. It was as if he were a completely different person from only a few seconds ago.
My overly confident self decided to do the one thing I hated, bring attention to myself. I was desperate to find out what they were all keeping from me.
