Days before the newborns' arrival and I've done nothing but lay in my bed, hidden by the mound of pillows and blankets I use to shield me from the world. My injuries consisted of only, scratches, deep cuts, and bruises, so I was healed before even realizing it, though I had the unfortunate habit of scratching my ugly scabs.
I haven't heard anything from the pack or what kind of state it may be in, except that no matter what, they will fight with us for Bella. But once that's over, so ends the alliance. I figured that would've happened anyways, but it seems they're willing to fight with a mixed breed like myself to protect Bella.
To my surprise, Edward decided to grace me with his presence each and every morning. Always swooping in to make sure I was okay, or to ask if I wanted breakfast, maybe even simply to see if I'm still alive. I can't say the visits were pleasant but for the first time, I felt important. Like maybe he actually cared.
One morning he stopped by to let me know that he and Bella were going to the battlefield with Jesper and Jacob to see if they can find a way to mask her scent so the newborns don't track us to the camp sight. I wasn't entirely sure what campsite he meant, or what the plan was exactly but I didn't feel like leaving my room (like usual) so I decided to sit that one out.
Later that night I heard the sound of four rhythmic knocks on my white wooden door and I knew immediately that it was Edward. I seemed to have developed a dependency on his visits because I didn't have the energy to respond to anyone. I found myself waiting all day and all night just to hear that exact pattern of knocking. It was like music to my ears.
"Come in," I muttered, my mouth half-covered by pillows, partially muffling my voice. Shortly after, Edward slipped through the door, closing it behind him, and walking leisurely towards my bed. I was under my black covers, staring out the windows where I got a perfect view of the pink-coloured clouds that concealed the setting Sun.
He sat down on my bed and I could feel the weight shift under him. I rolled slightly towards him and looked up to meet what used to be the things I hated most about him. It was now my only source of comfort. I guess my mind is just trying to hold on to whatever it can as I try to ignore the prior events.
"Hey," he said softly, in a nurturing timbre, before brushing the white strands of hair from my face so I could see properly.
"Hey," I replied, though my voice was weak and frail from the many hours I've gone without speaking. "How did it go?" I asked, shifting my gaze back outside.
"I've got good news and bad news. The good news is, Jacob's stench easily masks Bella's scent. The bad news is, he has no other choice but to come to the campsite with us," he explained. I couldn't even manage a frown or express any disconcerted emotions.
"Okay," I said simply. Edward looked down before following my gaze out the window.
"I would've considered letting you fight if it weren't for—" I cut him off.
"I know," I replied blandly, not daring to meet his eyes. I had no energy to object, although I truly believe he would've considered if it weren't for everything that was happening between me and the pack. I can only begin to imagine their furiousness. At least at the campsite, I'll be with one person who wants to kill me and one person who wants to protect me. Being cooped up with Bella and Jacob is nothing compared to fighting on a battlefield with both newborns and werewolves that all want me dead.
