Author: @BlueTea29
Read: chapters 1-5
Grammar.
I only noticed a few minor mistakes that didn't disrupt the reading too much. A few words might be missing in some sentences. There were a few instances where a sentence had odd phrasing.
Paragraphs.
Your paragraphs were well organized with clear ideas. Dialogue was separated from paragraphs of description. The action was well paced. Readability was high due to organized and separated paragraphs.
Characterization.
I love the slow build-up to the main character's identity. The first chapter gave a basic background, but as a reader I'm anticipating everyone's reaction to the reveal of knowledge. I love that you're also showing personality for the lesser characters.
Yueh is a strong character. It's refreshing to see that you're not afraid to let her suffer and go through hardships. She has an amazing journey ahead of her. She's a memorable character because she stands out from other slaves. There's a depth to her that readers will love exploring.
Style.
Your style includes a lot of telling, which works in some respects. The first chapter read like the opening of a story book with how telling and factual it was to Yueh's journey. Your style is quite consistent throughout with a reserved manner and quick actions. It follows along nicely with the life of the slaves.
Plot.
Although these chapters were short, I felt like there was so much packed into them. I love that you took your time with revealing the major plot. There were so many little hints gathering up to the end of the fifth chapter that made the transition seamless.
The setting filled each of the reader's senses. Not only can we see the mud-filled market, but feel it on our trousers, smell the stench of unwashed slaves, hear the commotions, and taste the bile in the air. You brought it and I'm here for it.
The buildup to the conflict was perfect. Introducing the two Vikings in an earlier chapter, let's the reader know that they'll be important to the plot later on. Yueh's description and fear helps build anticipation for the transition as well.
I absolutely love the planning that you've put into this book. This has been an enjoyable read and I look forward to the future chapters you release.
