His work laptop and a few change of clothes for a couple of days work where all Wangji shoved into his backpack to take with him.
Wei Wuxian who had followed him on a whim back to his studio apartment gave him a questioning look. "That's all?" He quirked his eyebrow. "Lan Zhan..." Wuxian sighed sitting on Wangji's bed unashamedly. "Do you think you can easily hunt down my stalker in just a couple of days? Are you underestimating the culprit or overestimating your skills?"
Wangji gave him a hard look, displease apparent on his handsome face.
"Woah!" Wuxian defended. "I just don't want you disappointed, Lan Zhan!" But Wangji just pierced him more with his angered amber eyes. Wuxian then had no choice but to drop the subject and stood from his post, sighing to himself. "Alright, do what you want. If you're ready, let's go."
Wen Ning was by the car park when they reached the ground floor. He bowed with a smile towards his Master and the young detective, politely opening the door for the two men. "A pleasure to meet you, Detective Lan." He greeted.
Wangji was inconvenienced sitting next to Wuxian. The man kept blubbering nonstop, he was giving him a hard time focusing on the files he was reviewing.
"Lan Zhan! Won't you reply to me? My throat is sore now but you haven't even said a single word to me since we left your apartment!" Wuxian sulked on his right, pulling his sleeves like a kid seeking attention.
Wangji's eyes narrowed at him, pulling his sleeve off Wuxian's hand. "Can't you just shut up?!" He hissed, eyes instantly looking back at the papers on his lap. Four years he had not lost composure even once, and here he is again losing the sh*t out of him because of the same annoying man!
"Lan Zhan---" Wuxian's soft voice whimpered like a kicked puppy but Wangji kept his indifferent attitude. He ignored him to the best of his ability and just kept flipping the case's records, scrutinizing every details and looking at the gory pictures of the dead bunny which was left by the suspect on Wei Wuxian's bed in his home in Beijing.
Suddenly, Wangji's heart skipped a beat. Memory of a younger Wei Ying smiling at him, calling his name adoringly, while playing with a white bunny in his arms. "Lan Zhan, can we take him home?" Wei Wuxian looked so young, so innocent, so beautiful back then.
Minutes passed with him reminiscing his abandoned past until Wangji was brought back to the present when something heavy landed on his shoulder. Wei Wuxian's head was leaning on him. Eyes closed, his pinkish thin lips slightly parted as he draw in and out slow breaths.
Wangji growled internally. He intended to push the head off his shoulder when Wen Ning's voice implored him. "Detective Lan, if you can please kindly let Young Master rest a tiny bit more. He hasn't had a wink of sleep since the incident three days ago. I'm afraid he would pass out soon if he doesn't get enough rest."
Wangji looked at Wen Ning's eyes through the rearview mirror, gritting his teeth while he nodded. His eyes roamed back to the man comfortably leaning on his shoulder, deep in his slumber. This close, Wangji could see the forming dark circles under the beautiful almond eyes. His lips looked a bit paler than Wangji could remember too. Wangji felt something tingling in his tummy. His fingers itching to touch the smooth skin of the sleeping man.
But he shouldn't.
He couldn't allow himself.
He swiftly turned his head the other way, looking at the passing blurry views. They're outside of Beijing now.
"We moved into a remote place after the incident, Detective." Wen Ning spoke. "Sorry it is taking a while before we reach the villa."
"Mn." Wangji hummed, lost in his many thoughts until they've reached their destination.
Wen Ning is already on Wuxian's side door ready to lift the body off Wangji when Wangji's body automatically moved, pulling Wuxian's body closer to his chest and willingly carried him on his arms without being asked.
"Lead the way." Wangji said.
Wen Ning pulled himself from the surprise, hiding the smile on his face. "Sure. Follow me, Detective Lan."
Wangji was careful with his steps and movements, cautious not to wake Wuxian up. He said to himself he would throw the man off his arms if he suddenly wakes up and tease him senselessly.
"Here, please." Wen Ning directed him into the Master's bedroom, lifting the covers of the bed so Wangji can place Wuxian's body and cover him with the blanket afterwards.
Wangji isn't the least bit surprised seeing the grandiosity of the novelist's abode. Wei Wuxian is silver spoon fed afterall, and his success in his chosen profession is just a cream on top of his wealth.
Wangji was covering Wuxian's body with the blanket when he saw Wuxian's right hand. He curiously held it, feeling a sticky liquid with the stench of blood.
He remembered the once clean bandage on it when he met him in the crime scene. It was the same hand Wuxian used to strangle Wen Chao and then suddenly hid in his pocket from then on, even while they were on his apartment and during their car ride.
Wangji's brow furrowed a bit.
"Accident." Wen Ning supplied bringing in the first aid kit from the washroom. "If you don't mind, Detective Lan? My medical skills are so poor, Young Master always complains on it." He shyly smiled offering Wangji the kit to help clean and re-dress Wuxian's injured knuckle.
Wen Ning left as soon as he could, excusing himself that he needed to do the mansion's nightly rounds to check that the windows and entrances are locked.
Wangji silently sighed, brows still furrowed. He sat on Wuxian's side, delicately placing the hand on his lap. Wangji then removed the soiled bandage.
If it would be another person, they might have winced at the state of the unclean cut of the lesion. A part of it was stitched, but maybe because of the commotion awhile ago, some of the sutures broke exposing the fresh flesh again. The blood that seaped from it has almost dried up as well and was more difficult to remove. But Wangji did not complain. His eyes were focused and his hand movements were careful and precise. In no time, he had cleaned the wound and patched it up nicely.
He left the room as if he had never been there. Silently. Steathily.
When the door closed softly, the almond eyes fluttered open, pupils blown out.
The man moved like a robot to his working desk. The light from his computer flickered and then kept glowing brightly against the unlit room. Slender fingers danced on the keyboard and in no time filled the screen, pages after pages.
The sun was creeping up the sky when the tapping sounds finally stopped. The man's lips curled up. It was beautiful but there's something eerie and frightening in it.
"Lan Zhan." He whispered as he take in a lungful of air, letting his feet take him to the balcony to bask his body with the chilly morning breeze.
