A/N:
A glimpse of a happy ending or not?
❤----------
How long has it been?
One year?
Two years?
Maybe more.
Lan Wangji stopped counting the agonising years. He was an empty soul since he had lost in touch with Wei Ying. He had scoured the world tirelessly for him on the first year: trying to find clues, following his leads. But it always ends with a dead end. Finally, Wangji had realised Wei Wuxian will come when he is ready. And it wasn't then. Maybe, not now either.
All Wangji could do at the time is to wait patiently for Wuxian's forgiveness to commence and for the right time to start anew.
Move on? In the early days of his desperation and hopelessness, Wangji did thought about moving on. He had weighed freedom against love, guilt against forgiveness, loneliness against hope. And he answered the question with a 'No' every single time.
The fact is, Wei Wuxian was Lan Wangji's greatest loss. And he still is.
The nostalgia of loving and being loved saved Wangji from all his negative thoughts, especially of giving up.
Torch still burning bright, Wangji will wait more. He can wait a little longer. He can still hold himself together...though how difficult it was.
Their promises to each other were his strings of hope. Their words of love which were still as fresh as they were the day they were spoken, were Wangji's source of optimism.
On silent days, he will recount with himself their happy memories mixed with his awful regrets. And he vowed to make up for them. He swore he will love better the next time they meet.

Wangji looked ahead, lifting his face to the blinding sun rays. Tiredness can be seen in his eyes, his face looked slimmer, and his skin was paler than before. The young detective unfortunately turned more workaholic to pass time. If he isn't at the office or the field, he will be stuck up in his home living a secluded life.
Today, for a change, he decided to step out for a bit.
It was Saturday morning, 15 years since the death of his parents. He brought them a bouquet, a mix of white roses and pink carnations of his mother's favourite pieces.
He gently closed his eyes, holding back his tears. Lately, he had been feeling more under the weather. Maybe he's at the border of depression or maybe he is already one.
Wangji then quietly gave them a prayer, a query of how they have been, a little chat of how he is, and a simple request to guide him find his way back to happiness.
He was deep in thoughts when something tackled his leg, lightly pulling his jeans. Momentarily disconcerted, Wangji looked down, face inscrutable.
There was a child. A little boy. A toddler, maybe two years old.
The baby smiled at him showing his two front teeth which seems a little big for his small mouth. It reminded Wangji of Wuxian's cute bunny smile. The kid even had a small mole under his lips. A total copycat, Wangji can't suppress a smile in reminisce.
"Up! Up!" The little kid made grabby hands pouting cutely, wanting to be picked up and cuddled, and Wangji was a helpless man against the baby's antics.
He crouched on his side and the baby clung onto him instantly. "Dada! Su'er m-miss Dada!" The toddler cooed with happy giggles and Wangji sat on the grass frozen and stunned.
The young man was baffled being called someone's father and his heart confusedly started thumping loud.
He looked at the kid once more and his eyes opened wider in utter amazement. With a closer look, the kid looks exactly like him when he was his age. Even his eye colour of soft amber, which is rare, was a duplicate of his'.
But his almond shaped eyes, bunny smile and lip's mole were Wuxian's.
'Who could this child be?' Wangji spun his head looking for the kid's guardian and a familiar tall man in formal suit was already looking at them happily.
"Detective Lan."
Wangji has no words. He took the child to his arms and approached the other man in fast strides.
"It seems you've already met Little Young Master." Wen Ning smiled and the baby regarded him, "Uncle Ning-Ning!" Then pointed at Wangji, burying his little head on the crook of Wangji's shoulder. "Dada! Su'er found Dada!"
Confusion was clearly apparent on Wangji's face especially when he sniffed a familiar rosy scent from the kid's hair.
Was he dreaming? Was he hallucinating?
"This kid...H-How could...He looks like me and Wei Ying?" Wangji started and Wen Ning smiled meaningfully at him.
"He is, indeed."
