Lan Wangji resumed his daily life like what he had planned. His busy work has been taxing his energy quite badly but he pushes to believe he was still doing okay.

'Barely surviving' were the words.

Still and all, the more he dived his head in his field, the more lost he felt. His stubborn heart manages to pull his thoughts one way or the other, reminisce the last words he had spat against Wuxian, and regrets them over and over despite his brain justifying that it was needed to be done for the greater good.

But was it really for the better?

Wangji felt that a part of him was dying every minute that counts while a huge part of him seemed to have already died the day he had turned his back on Wuxian. He was broken still, and absolutely nothing has helped him move on even a wink bit.

He just felt numb all over. Nothing excites him, the grey clouds seemed to tag around, and the doom and perpetual gloom savagely taking its toll on him.

Were his days always this blue and grey?

"You look like a dead person walking around, Senior Lan!" Jingyi will tell him once in a while and Wangji won't even have any inclination to regard nor respond at his junior's teasing.

This little sleuth barged in at Wangji's cubicle one fateful day, face contorted, voice skittish and edgy. "H-Have you heard the news, S-Senior?"

Wangji's solemn eyes swiftly peered at his subordinate, feeling a sense that something terrible has happened. His brows tightened together, slightly shaking his head.

He first thought it was their serial killer who had striked again.

"The Writer...argh!" Jingyi winced accidentally biting his tongue when his mouth wanted to blabber fast the news about the famous writer's accident that afternoon. Hurling in pain, he shoved his phone to Wangji's face for him to read on his own.

Dread filled Wangji's body seeing Wuxian's favourite Audi car crushed against a tree after losing its bearing. His eyes skimmed through the article, '2 injured passengers, including the Wei's heir', 'accident or planned incident?', 'stalker case turned attempted murder?'

It was too sudden, too unexpected. Too much. Wangji wasn't able to prepare for the impact of the imminent blow. He was horrified, overwhelmed with smothering fear. Fear of losing his Wei Ying.

'It might have been a sick joke?! A schemed drama? Wei Ying's plotted macabre humour?' Wangji fisted his trembling hand trying to deny and reason what he had just read.

A loud thump and fast footsteps from their head's office prompted the two detectives to turn to Officer Jiang. The man was quick with his strides leaving their base while on an urgent phone call. His face was scrunched and painted with signs of fury and worry, confirming the terrfying event of his cousin's accident.

Jingyi shuddered witnessing the dour staid Detective Wangji looked so crushed that Jingyi pinched himself on the arm to wake himself from the disturbing dream. "Ahh!" He blenched and rubbed his skin when suddenly he felt a breeze passing and his senior Detective Lan Wangji was then nowhere to be found inside that office.

Wangji's head was muddled with millions of thoughts while his heart fervently prays for Wuxian's safety as he swarm through the traffic to reach Beijing's Metropolitan Hospital.

He bumped on several shoulders, dazedly running to the reception on the emergency department. He had showed his police badge unrightfully, uncaring that it was unprofessional and a misuse of power, "Where is Wei Wuxian?" He spat firm and quick.

The middle aged lady gawked at him wide-eyed, taking in the enthralling features in its terrible messy state.

"Wangji?" A deep yet kind voice seeked and Wangji spun his head to that direction and fired the same question to the man on his early 30's wearing a white coat.

"Wei Wuxian?" Lan Xi Chen, Wangji's older brother tensed and stiffened on his brother's inquiry. He was about to ask something but held his mouth shut, letting Wangji shake his shoulders and desperately ask where Wei Wuxian was. "Can I see him?" Wangji choked out.

Xi Chen had never seen his baby brother so wrecked, so worried. 'What is that man to you, Wangji?'  He pried silently.

Yet again, Xi Chen held his thoughts, answering promptly the pleading eyes of his beloved brother instead.

"He isn't here."

"But the news said..."

"Wangji." Xi Chen tried to soothe his brother's agitation. "Mr. Wei refused to be treated and left as soon as his butler Wen Ning was taken care of."

Wangji stared at his brother stupidly. "Are they alright? I-Is Wei Ying alright?"

The older Lan's breath was halted by the query. 'Wei Ying?' His face was smooth outside but inside he was unsettled. 'How did Wangji knew the man's birth name? What is between them two?' Xi Chen did not like filling the gaps.

"Brother?" Wangji implored and Xi Chen looked at him, eyes slightly grim. He shook his head languidly. "I don't know, Wangji. No tests or scans were done to him. We don't know the severity of his injury."

Wangji gasped, head spinning. The answer he got was suffocating him. Without bidding courtesy, he ran back out, aimless in the busy road ahead.

"Please be alright." He whispered hoping the words will reach the heavens and grant his prayer.

He can't lose him. He realised he wasn't ready to fully let him go. Life without his Wei Ying was pointless. His world would stop without his essence. In that vast Earth, there would be no place for Wangji, if it isn't with his beloved.

Henceforth, Wangji would be stupid again for him. In his hand he will hold him. In his arms he would treasure him. And in his heart he will keep him.

"Just please be alright, Wei Ying."

'Wait for me.'

A/N:
Thank you to all who've given this novel VOTES and COMMENTS.
I do really appreciate it.

I wonder why this story does not receive much love like my previous works. I barely got 14-18 VOTES per chapter.
I think the story is straightforward, concise, and the plot satisfactory enough. But I can't help wondering why 🤔
Could you tell me your thoughts and help me improve it?
