Maybe fate is testing the waters or maybe it has a different plan for the two. Because the moment Wuxian turned off his phone, Wangji just got home and picked up the mobile he had forgotten to carry when he left for work that morning.
Wangji's heart beat erratically seeing Wuxian's numerous phone calls and two text messages. He felt the distance expanding between them two at the minute and a sense of foreboding apprehension giving him an overall unease.
'I love you, Lan Zhan.' He stared at the message for quite too long, feeling its genuine truthfulness.
"I love you too, Wei Ying." Wangji mumbled, now staring at the photo of them two. "Maybe a bit too much." He smiled thinly, caressing Wuxian's face on the screen. He is already missing him. "I'll see you soon." He whispered for the wind to carry.
Days had gone by. Wangji tried calling Wuxian every chance he's able to, but all attempts only directs him to Wuxian's voice mail. He would also visit the Wei's villa everyday hoping Wuxian had returned home, but there's no single sign of life in the huge estate every single time.
A week has almost passed. Wangji is getting nervous. He was afraid Wuxian will disappear indefinitely again. The days seemed longer as he waited for him to come back. 'Will Wuxian be breaking his promises again? With no goodbyes? Is history repeating itself?' The uncertainties and fear are driving Wangji crazy.
July ended before he knew it and then August came. The sky is pitch black, dusk had already passed hours ago, yet the young Detective is just coming back home, slowly dragging his feet on the corridors of his apartment block.
Lately, he has been feeling unanimated, passionless and despondent. Jingyi remarked his face had became more stoic than ever, 'It is too scary to look at even if you're this handsome!'
And despite just having attended the awards ceremony and congratulatory party after Wangji had victoriously tackled and subdued the famous psychopath serial killer on the loose, Wangji felt no ounce of felicity or satisfaction.
Wangji yielded to the blues of not having any news about his Wei Ying.
"Thanks, Brother. I'm sorry I wasn't able to meet you up today." He simply said to Lan Xi Chen. Even his voice on the phone sounded so lifeless and dull making his brother worried sick. Wangji hummed couple more times before he ended the call with a long sigh.
He had just reached his apartment's door when his eyes narrowed in scrutiny. He instantly became wary and vigilant. 'An intruder?' Someone has definitely tampered with his door's number lockcode screen.
Pulling his gun from his holster and placing it on his front, ready to shoot, Wangji cautiously entered his abode.
It was quiet. The hallway was empty, the living room untouched. He made another step and something warm lay on his foot. In a millisecond, his gun was pointed on a familiar white furry hare. "Wuji?" He picked up the fat bunny and instant giddy befall on him. He lurched to the dining hall, then to the kitchen, his world coming into a stop when he saw a familiar tall and slender frame hunching over the stove, stirring something which smells mouth-watering.
'Wei Ying?' Wangji doesn't want to blink in case the man would disappear when he does.
Feeling the stare, Wuxian turned to his side and a wide smile welcomed Wangji home. "Lan Zhan!" He called, his voice so sweet and mellow.
Wangji should be angry for the other disappeared again without a trace and come back as if nothing happened. But Wangji knew better. Wuxian hasn't had it better than him. The writer had grown thinner. His cheeks were hollower than before, and his rounded eyes, though showing mirth, looks tired.
Wangji leaped to Wuxian's side, hand reaching the older's face, caressing the healing bruise and cut on the side of Wuxian's mouth. "What happened? Who had done this to you?"
"It doesn't matter." Wuxian leaned to Wangji's touch, closing his eyes to feel the warmth of his lover's palm. His lips quaver, he wanted to cry in happiness, having Wangji within arm's reach again. The past month was just so sad. He did not even think he could escape.
On the other hand, Wangji felt hurt. He sank into a reverie of the countless times when Wuxian didn't allow him to know what goes on in his mind. The latter remained to be an impenetrable mystery and it just hurts Wangji to know he isn't welcomed to share his lover's misery.
Wangji leaned his forehead on the other, carefully moving his thumb on Wuxian's now more prominent jaw. "Not saying anything does not mean that we won't have a fight."
There was horror in Wuxian's eyes as he looked up to meet Wangji's stern gaze. A petty fight just after their reunion isn't desirable at such moment. He stuttered for a second, thought for a minute, before he gave away, "Father..." in an almost incomprehensible voice.
Wangji saw Wuxian looking wounded, before the latter quickly hid his face on Wangji's shoulder, hugging him tight. "He'd came to know about us..."
"...and he doesn't like me for you." Wangji buried his face on Wuxian's tresses, kissing deeply the soft hair while sniffing the lovely scent. Wangji had always known time will come that people will know about their relationship and try to keep them apart. He is just a mere Detective while Wuxian is from a world Wangji does not belong. Least to mention the stereotypes for same-sex affair in their own country.
Wuxian squirmed in his hold only to kiss Wangji's neck, pulling his face up and regrettably divulging, "He arranged a business marriage for me."
"And?" Wangji was so calm that Wuxian felt more tense. "Of course I said No! I only want you Lan Zhan!"
Wangji thought that it was inappropriate to smile at such times, but he couldn't help it after hearing Wuxian's fervid answer. "Good to hear." He grinned more and leaned closer succumbing to the strong urge to take Wuxian's lips he had missed in the last four weeks. "I love you, Wei Ying. I won't let you go. Ever."
The soft giggles of his beloved warmed Wangji's heart. "I love you too, Lan Zhan! So, so much my puppy!"
