---------Lan Wangji woke up from a terrible dream feeling something bad is bound to happen.
Dazed, he ran to Wei Wuxian's room without even knocking. The room was messy with books, magazines, newspapers and loose papers all over the place. One might think someone has ransacked it and turned it upside down. 'Is it the stalker?' Wangji thought, heart thundering with his fast breaths.
He caught movements on his periphery where the door is widely open leading to the balcony. His heart just pounded even more when he saw Wuxian standing at the top of the balcony balustrade. Their eyes connect for a second and before Wangji could think or move, Wei Wuxian directed a smile at him, body falling back to who knows what!
Wangji bolted to the edge, mind and heart going haywire hearing the loud splash down below.
He looked down terror-striken.
Wuxian's body floated on the swimming pool, unmoving. "F*ck!" Wangji cursed as he jumped too, adrenaline rushing fast through his veins.
Unharmed, Wangji quickly pulled the body out of the water. A soft giggle made him stop. The unmoving body convulsed followed by loud laughters. "You look so worried, Lan Zhan!" Wei Wuxian chuckled, pissing Wangji to the roof.
The detective pushed the cunning man away in irate, glaring back with deathly daggers.
First day, and the man had already pulled a prank on him!
'Your job is to protect him and solve the case.' Wangji vividly recalled Jiang Cheng's instructions.
'For f*ck's sake! I am not a babysitter!' Wangji seethed.
"Hey Lan Zhan!" Wei Wuxian called as the younger man pulled himself up on dry land leaving him alone in the water.
The sight of the body dripping wet, clothes hugging the lean muscles, made Wei Wuxian's eyes crinkle with desire.
"Lan Zhan! Wait for me!" He called again but the annoyed man pretended not to hear him.
Wuxian planned to go after Wangji and enjoy the sullen yet sexy look on the man's face, but when he stepped on his right foot, his face winced at the pain on his ankle. "I think I've over done it this time." He smiled watching Lan Wangji's back disappearing from his sight.
Meanwhile in Wangji's quarters, the younger's fists were clenched tightly and wanting to hit and smash something. He went to the shower to calm his nerves, but got only more vexed remembering how careless Wuxian was to throw himself a floor beneath! 'He's not an immortal for G*d's sake!'
Anger still thrumming in him, Wangji stayed in his room throughout the day, working on his laptop and reviewing the CCTV footages from the writer's home in Beijing. He intended to finish the case as soon as possible and not to stay any longer with the cunning dare devil.
A soft knock disturbed his concentration. "Lunch is ready, Detective." Wen Ning informed from the outside.
Wangji opened the door for him stating he isn't hungry which made the assistant's face frown. "You haven't eaten anything since last night, Detective!" He reasoned. "If it is Young Master that you're trying to avoid, don't worry, he is resting in his room and said would stay cooped there until you forgive his cheeky stunt this morning."
A fresh swell of rage welled up from Wangji's chest. 'What is he? A kid?!'
Wen Ning attentively saw through Wangji's ragged breaths and huffs, thus he diverted his attention to the CCTV playing on the detective's computer. "Detective Lan! I can help you with it." He beamed coming inside Wangji's room and skimming through the footage. "Here!" He pointed at the moving shadow on the corner of the screen. "The shadow of the culprit!" Wen Ning brightly explained, then sadly frowned. "But it was the only clue we have. Young Master reviewed it and told me the suspect is a tricky one."
"How so?" Wangji asked pulling the chair besides Wen Ning and taking his notebook to diligently write some important notes.
Wen Ning narrated what had happened that day. They were at a conference when it happened so the Young Wei Master was luckily out of the scene. It was also a Tuesday so there are no workers inside the house except for the two guards by the gate. "Young Master does not like people roaming around his house as noises disturbs his concentration when he is writing. So the staffs only come every Monday and Friday."
Basing on the camera footages, there had been a total power outage on the whole estate early afternoon. It usually takes only 30 seconds for the backup generator to work, but that time it took almost 5 minutes before the power came back on. "Just enough time to enter the house, run to Young Master's room and run back out." Wen Ning looked directly at Wangji's eyes. "That is...if you know exactly which is Young Master's bedroom."
Wangji's eyes widen. "You mean the stalker might have been around him since..."
"We don't know, Detective." Wen Ning unsurely answered. "But as a precaution, we terminated all the workers' contract. The one who manages this estate only comes once a week and they are the ones who have been working for the Wei family even before Young Master was born."
Wangji's eyes narrowed at the assistant. "D-Don't look at me like that D-Detective! I was with Young Master that day!"
Wangji nodded his head but he still seemed to doubt the assistant. Wen Ning understands him though. Everyone is a suspect until the culprit is caught. Besides, it doesn't need to be the person with motives to go and do the work himself. He could just describe the floor plan to a paid perpetrator and not get his hands dirtied during the job.
"Young Master also thinks the suspect had access to the main monitors because the person knew the blind spots in the cameras, thus we only have this shadow on the CCTV from the back door as a clue from the footages taken that day."
Wangji kept brooding over the informations, when Wen Ning waved a hand on his face. "So, would you like your lunch now, Detective?" He smiled hopefully, as his Young Master is throwing a tantrum and threatening to be on hunger strike too if the Detective won't have any of his meals.
