Seconds tick by into minutes, and minutes into hours. Night surely has fallen by now. The rustle of several students complaining about missing their boat rides home for the mid-term break fill the safe-room. It's a bit of an odd name now, though. "Safe" room. If the Red Brotherhood makes it to the academy now they'll surely hear all the complaints and come down here to kill us all.

Not that I'm worried about that happening.

I'm sure their target is a rich merchant who lives on this island, not a student or a professor. As far as big business and politics go we're pretty harmless.

I rub at the side of my face that is still aching and has now swollen. For such a soft spoken fellow Tarron can pack a punch!

I glance over at him, now sitting cross-legged on the bed across from us, Feiya curled in his lap as he absent-mindlessly smooths her hair. He hasn't said a word to me or even looked at me since I got back. I want to break the awkwardness between us, but now doesn't seem to be the right time, not as everyone else is around. Thus, I let him be, and instead turn my mind to something else.

Zahairas?

What?

I sigh as I try to think of the best way to word my request. I know you said it would be best if I stayed here over the break, since keeping you a secret will be hard at home. But-

But nothing.

No, you don't understand! I groan as I roll my eyes and punch the bridge of my nose. Tempest is-

What does a storm have to do with anything? You can predict weather now?

No, Tempest is my sister's name!

I thought it was Axellia.

Thats my twin sister, I'm talking about my little sister, you scaly idiot!

How many sisters do you have?

Three, and-

There's another one?

Would you just a listen!

I groan as I take a deep breath to try and calm myself before speaking again.

I saw Tempest in the mirror I made foe alchemy finals. She was crying. She's all alone, having to look after Vilda by herself, and she doesn't have anyone to talk to. If Father is paying any sort of attention to her he's no doubt scolding her for every little short coming, and since I'm not there to protect her she'll just have to bear it. And-

What about your mother?

"Bah!" I say out loud before I catch myself. I glance to make sure no one heard my out yet before continuing. I sometimes wonder if our mother even knows she has children anymore. I asked Father to let Tempest and Vilda visit us here, but he said no because he thinks Axellia and I need to study more and that the girls will be a distraction, so-

And you think you leaving will be any different?

I pause, sitting straight up as I ask, What?

Your father wants you to study with no distractions over the break. Do you not think he will se you returning home as a distraction?

I lower my head as I heave a sigh. I suppose.

And will that not make things more contentious for this Tempest?

Probably.
