"Edith Piaf (Said It Better Than Me)", Sparks
A few days later, Anna put an envelope on the bar. "We've received that for you." The paper was very delicate, and the address was written by hand. No sender indicated. In it was an elegant card. An invitation for the opening of Aidan's exhibition. He had written on the back: "I would be honored if you would come. A." I smiled. Of course, I would.
I was intrigued and I wanted to know more about him. It was not something new, but definitely surprising for me. I had lived most of my life happily alone and I had very rarely felt this way about someone. Anna knew that and I think she realized that there was something special going on.
"It's from this guy from the other night?" She asked.
"The vampire, yes. He wants me to come to his exhibition. I am tempted."
"I bet you are. Hey, I wanted to ask you: my brother will be in town this weekend. I'd love for you to meet him. He has just learned what I am. And I thought that maybe talking to you could help him understand."
"Of course. What is his name again?"
"Lucas."
"Right, Lucas. He is younger than you are, isn't he?"
"Yes, he's 22. Also, he's a part-time DJ. He's really good. Do you think he could have a set at the club?"
"Sure. Why not? I look forward to meeting him." She kept on washing the counter of the bar. I hesitated for a minute and then pursued. "I can talk to your brother, but you know that you can also talk to me. I understand that it is not an easy situation, believe me. It was one thing to become an immortal, but it is another to have to deal with that with people belonging to your previous life. So if you need anything, I am here for you."
"I know. Thank you. I didn't want to bother you with my non-problems. You had a lot on your plate these days."
She turned away to store some glasses behind her as a way to avoid looking me in the eye.
"You never bother me, sweetie," I said. She turned back and leaned on the counter. I put my hand on her arm. "You know that."
"Yes. But I'm fine. It's just that I don't really know what to tell him. I don't even comprehend what this new life means to me. I had no idea of who I was as a mortal, so now... I understand it's like a rebirth, but for now, I just feel like I've lost something."
"You died, Anna. It is normal to feel this way. I am not going to tell you that it will be all rainbows and unicorns, but you will have opportunities that very few creatures have on this earth. The world is vast and incredible. You just have to live your life. You are immortal but you are also very young. Give yourself a break."
"I love it when you're all-wise. That's exactly why I want you to talk to Lucas."
I laughed and kissed her on the forehead: "When you say 'wise', you mean grandma-like, right? I hear you."
