Lucas' Playlist: "Waste My Time", Findlay
James sat in front of me and, without saying a word, he threw a blood bag on the table. An empty one. He was frantic but still silent. I put the bag away and looked at him.
"Why are you showing me this?" I said.
"..."
He ran his hand in his hair and, as if giving up, made a move to leave.
"You need help?" I asked.
"..."
He stood still beside the table and I knew that I had to insist: "Do you?"
Without looking at me, he answered: "Yes."
"Alright. Sit down then." He did. "Is it the only blood that you drank?"
"No."
"Did you attack anyone?"
"Not yet."
"You are going to stay with me and we will figure this out. You came clean before, you can do it again."
He finally faced me, with suspicion, as if he were trying to figure out what I had just said. "That's it? You'll just help me?"
I took another sip of my cocktail. "Well, why did you come to me if you did not think I would help you?"
He looked me straight in the eyes. "I have no one else to come to."
"I understand." I paused to look around. "You should not stay here. There is too much temptation. It is dangerous. Do you prefer to stay at my place or for me to go to yours?"
"I don't know."
"Alright. You can come to my apartment. Wait here just for a minute."
I moved away while keeping an eye on him and I took my phone to call Aidan. "My love, I know you will not like it, but James needs my help. He is going to stay at my place for a few days."
"What happened?"
"He's back on human blood."
"What? Did he hurt someone?"
"I don't think so."
"How did you learn about this?"
"He came to me for help. That is a good thing. He is ready to fight."
"Alright, keep me posted, okay? And... be careful," he said very quietly.
"I will," I said, before hanging up.
I looked at James, fidgeting in his seat, where I had left him, his eyes closed while he visibly tried to control his breathing.
"What's with James this time?" Anna asked, rolling her eyes.
I put my hand on her shoulder. "You do not want to know. But he needs my help."
She frowned. "What's the deal? Are you guys friends now?"
"Well, I think we can say that." I smiled.
"It's a lot of vampires these days, if you ask me."
"I know," I said, as reassuringly as I could, while squeezing her arm.
I went back to the booth and led James to the backdoor to prevent him from crossing the whole crowd of the dancefloor. Then we took a taxi to come home and he was more silent than he had ever been.
